Can an 85 get to 87 power with small mods?

If you're only wanting to bump the power slightly then have you looked at the stickys at the top of this section? There's some good info in them and should help you get to your goals.;)

87 ecm, bigger injectors, turbotweak chip, alky or e85, modded turbo from Bison, ported intake, better downpipe, etc. lots to do out there, just read a lot and see what the quicker guys are doing.

Thanks for the response guys. I did read quite a few threads but there is actually too much info as a newbie to make sense. Guess it will take some time and lots of reading. The one thing i don't want to do is throw parts at it hoping i will get to where i want. Would be nice to know that "do this" and you will get exactly the results you want I read the recipes but there are only a few and except for 1 the others are heavy modification.

What are your specific goals?

hello welcome to turbo buick... i to am in the same boat as you but after reading and reading i have went with a set up on here that i leaned and i liked. im currently putting a 87 turbo on my 85 car and adding a inter cooler and a alky kit, and a 87 intake. thats where im going with my car.. there are alot of people on here that are true to the hot air. at the moment now im running a stock turbo with 42ibs of injectors, a fell pro fuel pump, and 87 computer with 87 ecm and a turbo tweek chip. there are alot of mods for our cars. it just takes time and time. lol... we are not like the 87/86 where we can buy bolt on parts. we have to work and really think with our cars. and to me thats what makes us special. for years i have hung with IC guys and they make fun of my car all the time. but i love my GN. its mine and its real. thats all that matters at the end of the day. take your time. listen to everyone here on the site. The hot air guys are the best in book...lol... HOT AIR FOR EVER.

Thanks all, i have been on the BMW forums for years so very familiar with the community structure, rules, etc. What would we be without these forums and love for these cars? I would love to gt the car into the mid-13's. I know this is going to require time, effort, and money and that is fine. This is a long term build. I understand initially i should do a general tune up, timing chain kit, and valve springs. I plan to drive it for a little while. I have a turbo rebuild kit as i was informed the turbo blew and was smoking out the exhaust. If it isnt repairable then i have some considerations to make. I am going to add electric fans and the EBL SFI-6 ECM to the car initially too.

First of all, there is nothing "cheap" that you can do to get a hot air close to intercooled power! :D

I do have some experience with many HA cars including one that dynoed over 600 HP, and another one that has a NHRA 1985 Regal stock class record at 11.62 @ 113 MPH, and neither of these came "cheap".

The one MAJOR issue I have with a hot air car is the turbo placement, and brackets make it a nightmare to just do routine work on the engine. :(

The block and heads on a HA will work fine when the intercooled conversion is done, and getting rid of the awful intake manifold will bring the car alive HP-wise.

You have a good start going with electric fans as that is one step in the conversion. To me, the most "difficult" part is the wiring harness conversion, or replacing the complete engine harness with an 86-7 unit.

Assuming you are handy with a wrench, most of the other work is just bolt-on, and of course obtaining the parts needed for the accessories and AC.

Good luck on whatever you decide, and just be sure you have a good plan to follow for your end result. :)

85 200/300 - > 87 245/355. What can i do to get to the later grand national power that is cheap and a good recipe?

Thanks!
to gain just a few ponys wont take much. check tps sensor at full throttle you probably don't get 4.75-5 volts you need for full boost/timing/fuel curve use the 86=87 style hi performance exhaust with matching convertor will free up some power too. if you can find/make a slightly bigger downpipe to go with im sure you will be past a stock 86=87 car

I have a HA myself, but I look at it like this"a slow GN is better than no GN"!

If I had intercooled guys laugh at my hot air car it would be a challenge to make it faster than most of theirs hot airs will run if you work at it. See ya! John

An upgraded downpipe, and getting the boost upwards of 18-20 psi (pump gas+alky or E-85) should make the car fun to drive and could net you mid 13's....even on a stock turbo. My advise: take it one mod at a time and see what works for you...don't try to do it all at once or you will end up frustrated and broke.

Thank you for the advice. I was at gbodyparts last week and he showed me so many add-ons for this car. upgrade packages and such. I would rather spend a little more and do it without E85 or Alcohol. We will see how it goes.

fuelpump, check tps voltage this is important- downpipe/exhaust- torque convertor-, anything after these will just enhance these

Do you need to modify the computer in order to get it running better? Also what entails converting the harness to 86/87 and why would you want to or need to?

caspers my have a kit still, that adds a air intake temp sensor so you can put an 86=87 computer in it (mine has it from past owner) swaping a 86-87 harness so only reason to convert harness is to run 86-87 computer or engine ,adapter can add an 86-87 coilpack to your stock car.
the 84-85 computer will be fine , chip is still available but im sure someone on here knows where to get one burned. I would get the other mods first . ,get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator too. also check out in hotair section speed daddy headers thread.

Not only is alky a good safeguard for your engine, but bang for the buck as well. Tune the car and turn up the wick a bit. Getting whatever power you do have to the pavement is key. Mid 13's is not out of reach by any stretch of the imagination.
