Thanks alot Gov. Cuomo  . Now in NY if your window tint is 30 % or more your car WILL FAIL NYS Inspection . My windows were tinted when I bought the car and didn't want to remove it even though I could get a ticket for tint . The cops for the most part didn't bother you about it , but now it won't pass inspection . Sucks big time !:rage:

Yeah, same thing here in Quebec.(n) My girlfriend just gave her car (which had tinted windows for 6 years) to her daughter, and after only two weeks, her daughter got pulled by a cop who gave her a ticket of $160. :rage: because the windows were a little too dark for his taste! He could have given her a warning instead but noooo ! What an a**hole! :poop:...The car has been like that since brand new in 2010 and now, that guy on a power trip decided that it's not correct anymore!

Claude. :wtf:

It's been illegal here if it's too dark , but now it won't pass inspection !!

We will see how this works. Nothing has come across the inspection computer yet as to when it goes into effect or how it will be measured. They have a Web camera on the system to see the inspector already that they just made mandatory to function, but not mandatory to be used. Ours is shoved in the back of the cart. But eventually the inspector needs to photographed to initiate the inspection. They will have to send tint meters to every station before any of this will go into effect. Makes me wonder what will be the legal limit. Factory glass is 30 percent tint / 70 percent light transmittance. So no aftermarket tint is legal. But I have smoked glass in my camaro. No additional film and a dot compliance etched in the glass. I know it's over 30 percent. Wonder what happens to that.

Check this out Guys , for as long as I can remember ( I'm 46 ) here in Ms we have had to get our cars inspected once a year for like 5 $ . Now they have changed it where you do not have to do that . SO now in the state that catches a lot of negative comments we can drive all the junk we want to , Kinda going in the wrong direction and the tint was part of the inspection .

I think it's only the front door windows and of course the windshield you're not allowed to tint. You can do whatever you want to the rear side glass and backglass too.

Yes, NY has been that way as long as I've been alive. Rear windows can be painted solid as long as you have 2 side view mirrors. My 2 front windows are smoked glass. I was off today, I'll check tomorrow if something came through the system. I doubt anything will go into effect by the 1st of the year like the law says. Last time the state pulled a last minute inspection law change was about 10 years ago when they tried splitting the month into thirds. 1st through 10th, 11-20, 21-31. That was ended before March because it was not thought out. If this ends up being mandatory for January 1st I'll be shocked. Just not enough time to get it sorted out.

I do believe you are right about no tinting the front windshield and the driver an passenger window. because on SUV an Crew cab pick up truck, they come factory tinted at 35%. But this is America so do what you need to do. stand firm.

I know Sam, just don't see how they plan on putting it in effect in 30 days. It takes 3 weeks for a check for inspection stickers to go through the front door, to the nysi office, and the stickers packaged and sent out. How do they think they are going to get every location to buy a meter, which I'm sure it will be only the one they source, change the computer program to include the new input, and whatever other legal crap. I know my corporate company will take another month to cut a check for the meter if that's what they will use. I'm sure we could get away with the old style card that you put behind the glass and eyeball the color. But that will allow people to use the "inspectors discretion". That will just start a fight between everyone that "has had that tint on for 20 years and the police told me it was legal" crap. Needs to be done with a actual meter.

I couldn't find anywhere when it was suppose to go in effect . The bill was sponsored by a Rep. Senator from Syracuse .

So, I spoke with my area manager today about the meter. My company is ordering them for all locations in NY and sending them to each of our shops. I assume that the system is only going to require a pass /fail input like the other safety checks. Basically means if the inspector doesn't give a crap about the tint you will still pass. Kinda like the parking brake, wipers, broken taillights, seat belts, mirrors, tires, brakes, fuel leaks, tie rods, springs, rotted frame, and everything else that comes in the shop with a fresh inspection sticker. Nothing to get excited about.
