Cleaning old weatherstripping

I'm in the process of restoring my car. The old weatherstrip came out in pieces. Allot left inside the retainers.

What's the best way to clean out the old glue and chunks of foam left in the channels without ruining them?

I removed the channels and worked on my bench carefully scraping the old stuff out with various sizes of flat blade screw drivers, and various small wire brushes for clean up.

A dremel tool with fine brushes will speed that up. Also used some mek to soften up the old weatherstrip adhesive. It's still a tedious chore.

I had all of my window trim powder coated. What worked best was to soak all of the pieces in lacquer thinner. It loosens all of the goo and rubber.

Who knows what adhesive may have been used to stick these on (or maybe back on after they have come loose). Pretty much I used solvents mentioned above that I had around. I also had acetone available and used a lot of the adhesive remover Farm & Fleet has in quarts. Use that crap OUTSIDE or under the exhaust fan (I would rather have a bad booze hangover than the pounding head I got from those solvents).

And the tools TurboDave said. Used many small detail wire brushes (brass & steel) from the dollar bin.
