Rear End Upgrade

Never had my eliminators leak. Wouldn't want them in a street only car. Would go ford ends.

Im thinking of staying with the original GM 8.5 to try and keep it looking somewhat original..just beefed up. If that makes any sence.
Plus i kinda already ordered my rear disc brakes from bear for a GM 8.5 :cautious:

The 8.5 with the right mods will get you deep into the 10's. Period.

Get some quality axels, HR bars and control arms and go to town.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but all this is actually going into my 84 hurst/olds. Not my GN. I have a thing for g-bodies. This project should be an off body resto with and LS turbo. I've already purchased ride-tech's coil over full suspension and 14" bear brakes from a supporting vender. I would like to continue purchasing from venders who support this forum while building a good quality build. I just lack a bit of car knowledge and need some good guidance

Get ahold of Neal. Lou is very specific in what he works on for customers, unless it's a personal project he sticks to intercooled Turbo Regals. Neal is a VERY smart guy.

Looks good. I would weld the tubes use the stock gear ratio

Agreed. A daily driver that's going to be romped on occasionally doesn't need any more than what you have in mind.

Does it really matter what size of tire/rim size i have with the gear ratio?
I will be runing bigger rim size than usual. My baer brakes wont allow anything smaller tham 18".
I wont be at the track much. But i will be in the streets hoping to kill anyone thats willing.

So i've already ordered Auburn Pro series, Moser axels 30 spline, TA girdle and ARP cover bolts.
Im going with stock 3.42 stock gears like u guys have recommended. But Motive Gear's website has 3 to choose from. Not sure which one to order
A-line serious -GM10-342A
Motive Gear -GM10-342
Motive performance -G885342

Could be application sensitive. Pure "race gears" are not intended to be used on the street. Might shoot them a note, and ask.

Chuck is correct that race gears are "softer" and less brittle than street gears so they will absorb shock better and are less likely to shed their teeth. I have replaced many ring and pinion sets with missing teeth in my race car over the years.

Since I do little street driving on my street car, I do not worry about the softer race gear having a shorter life span. When I upgrade rears, I never use the 30 year old original gears.

Please let us know your results, if any, of which is a race gear, thanks.

So I called Motive Gear today. Turns out you guys are correct.

Motive Gear # GM10-342 ("blue and black box") is more of an OEM replacement and its recommended as a daily driver option.

Motive Performance # G885342 is intended more towards racing applications
