.250" Gap between convertor and flex plate?? Question

I just installed and bolted up my new Stage 2 Tranny from Extreme Automatics and my new R&R 10" Convertor. I have a .250 gap between the convertor mount plate and flexplate with the convertor pushed all in toward the tranny. I have read some info about shimming the gap to .125 with washers between the convertor and flex plate. Is shimming acceptable or not really necessary with the .250" gap?

Make sure you don't use any old washer. You need to be sure all of them are the same thickness. They make hardened parallel ground shims for this purpose. ARP washers work well too, as they are ground to a tight standard.

Check crankshaft thrust. Pry crank forward and back, see if it moves. I've seen some move a country mile in terms of engine clearance!

Good thought to check it while I'm there. BUT!!! If that's where the gap is coming from I've got huge problems!!
I will check it.
Thanks
