Manual Boost Controller Questions

Can someone shed some light on something, please.

After my recent and first trip to the track and being advised to increase the boost from 22 to 25, I tried with my Hallman Pro RX manual boost controller but with no success.

Today, I took the car out for more testing consisting of making a quick blast, watch what the boost reads, pull over, open the hood, turn the mbc clockwise and then making another blast to see if the boost moved. Did this several times. Took it all the way up till it stopped turning and then backed it off as I heard turning to full stop is dangerous. PS, my Alky was at safe levels to protect my testing.

It seems no matter where the mbc was set, down or up, the boost ranged from 20 to maybe 23. That's it. No more.

Then it got me thinking so I read up on mbc's and how the Hallman works.

Maybe 2-3 pounds is all the Hallman can add based on where the boost was baselined or where my adjustable wastegate actuator is set?

Could this be what's going on?

After all, the mbc can't have infinite or unlimited boost adding capability, right?

I also wonder if I have the wrong spring in there.

Should I turn the Hallman down and add more boost at the adjustable wastegate actuator and then start turning the mbc back up to get where I need?

Thoughts?

Yes...one turn at a time IN on the wastegate. Assuming you want 25-26# boost... cracking pressure should be about 14# ...

Do not use the factory solenoid or the "T"...just run one hose from the MBC to compressor nipple and one nose from MBC to wastegate. Nothing in between.

You can stretch the spring a little and get a few extra lbs of boost out of it.

I think I have the problem figured out. I have the stock adjustable wastegate actuator. I probably should be running the heavy duty or high pressure adjustable wastegate actuator. I think the stock one is capping me.

I went thru the similar condition and found the stock actuator to start at such a low point you have to max it to reach those levels. I felt the HD will give more available options at 18# and above while using the Hallman to feel out your levels easily. Stay tuned............

A long time ago someone put a heavy spring in a actuator and called it a "heavy duty actuator". lol

A wastegate needs to be given time to catch the boost curve.

Boost spike will occur if you set the cracking pressure too high to your desired boost level. If the wastegate begins to open at target boost, a boost spike will occur as the wastegate will need some time to open to the right valve height to divert enough exhaust gas to maintain the desired boost level.

To eliminate a boost spike, the wastegate must begin to open before target boost by a certain amount of time depending on the turbo system. I set my cracking pressure slightly over 1/2 of my desired boost level. So if I'm running 26#, I set to 14-15#. Then raise the boost from there with the MBC.

Setting the cracking pressure to 19-20# is too much at the boost level you guys run.

It is amazing the number of things you don't really need, the HD actuator is one of those... and just one .o_O
