New guy with questions

Hello everyone. New here obviously and I just bought a 1987 Turbo Regal. I have some questions because this car confuses me. Basically the car appears to be a Regal Limited Turbo. It has the burgundy interior with bench seat and column shifter. Everything on the car appears to be authentic turbo regal. It has a crusty old 3.8 turbo hood ornament, all of the 3.8 turbo emblems look about 30 years old. It obviously has the turbo 3.8 under the hood. It also has an 8.5 rear with posi. It even has the stock turbo regal dashboard with the linear boost gauge.

However, the VIN and RPO codes indicate it's a plain jane Regal that came from the factory with the 307 V8. I don't particularly care about matching numbers, as I've looked the car over and took it for a very long test drive and everything appears to be in order, and I don't plan on showing it or trying to make a profit later. I'm slightly concerned it may have been stolen at some point in time but the Carfax shows no indications of foul play and the mileage records are consistent up to the current 75000 or so on the odometer. I guess my questions is: Is this really just a plain old V8 regal that someone took a whole lot of time and money to make it look identical to a Limited rather than a GN?

Regardless, it's my new project. It's already fast. I'm not sure what exactly it has for mods since I bought it from a dealer who took it in trade and didn't know for sure, but I know it at least has:

Upgraded Injectors w/ adjustable FPR
Runs at 17-18 PSI WOT
Very aggressive shift kit
TTA wheels
CAI
Downpipe
Exhaust

I can assume the fuel pump has been upgraded since the car runs well with no knock.

It's fast, but I'm hesitant to really get on it until I upgrade the rear LCAs and UCA because those are factory. I have a lot of experience with fast cars and based on how the seat of the pants test feels I'd estimate this car to hit low 13s, maybe faster but without seeing how it launches can't really tell.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and check in here and see if anyone else has ever seen something like this with mismatched equipment/VIN. Pictures below.

Car looks good man! And hey it's got all the right parts now regardless. So why not research and enjoy it? Love the color combo, awesome!!

LV2 code is for the 5.0L V8 engine. RPO would show LC2 for the turbo 3.8L if it were born with the turbo engine. 8th digit of VIN would be '7' for turbo engine as well. Looks like it was born a 307 V8 car.

If you're happy with it and don't plan on selling then who cares, just enjoy it. Looks like a nice car, good luck.

As you have already deciphered on your own, it is likely not original. Could be a Turbo that was re-VIN'd from junkyard to mask theft, or it could simply be a Turbo 3.8 transplant. #1 enemy of these cars is rust (oh and blown head gaskets...oh and Transmissions) So I can see someone finding a solid Regal body and doing it up nice with their Turbo motor and LTD accessories from one that was rusting out. It will only come back to bite you when you go to sell it, but then again, All of us lose money on them haha.

So if it runs right, and you like it, enjoy it!! You will never get carded for your VIN on the street, especially if all they see are your taillights ;)

To add, just so you know, Limited cars were identified with a "M" in the 5th spot on your VIN.

Does the dash vin match the rpo code tag vin ?
See what the motor and trans have for vin #'s , If they both match each other and look like they were born in that car,you may want to start inspecting that dash vin tag for signs of anything not looking right, you can also poke around under the dash to see if it looks like it has been removed,
Does the trunk lid look original to the car?
A few more tidbits to look for to help determine what the car is/was.
Are you thinking it may be a limited only because of the bench seat/column auto ?
Limiteds were not the only ones to have bench seats and column auto's, lots of t-types came that way.
Are they Limited seats ?
Does it have the Limited door panels ? Doesn't look like it in the pic .
Lighted " limited Regal " on the right side of the dash ?
There is no limited badge on the rear 1/4's .
And as pointed out the vin says it's not a limited or a turbo car, but vin's as everybody knows can be messed with.
After 30 years who knows what may have been changes ,switched ,removed, etc.

It's probably just a regular v8 t ,basic bench seat car that was turbofied later in life, but it never hurts to play the sleuth and see exactly what you have.

Yeah the rpo sticker vin matches the dash vin. Haven't checked the engine/trans. I'm not too worried about it. It runs well and it is clean under the hood. It needs some bushings and minor maintenance but otherwise it's in good shape. I checked the injectors and it has 50# injectors. I'm going to pull the computer when I have time and see what kind of chip it has. It's fast.

My guess is your drivtrain came from either rusted like already stated or wrecked turbo car transplanted into that nice white car. Cant beat that color, very nice. It would bother some but im not one of them, have fun.

its not a limited ...your upper door panels arent limited , the limited upper has a coffin style handle

Welcome from Philly pa if you want answers they are here and 99%of the turbo regals owners are on this board
So good luck.with your car and do lots of research as I have

That's a pretty ride! Welcome! Whatever the hell that is on your battery positive terminal looks like a fire waiting to happen.

No the cruise control doesn't work. I also installed a Scanmaster recently and all seems to be in order except I think my O2 sensor is going out because the O2mv don't really make sense at WOT (car should have blown up) and my O2 sensor cycles only goes up my like 1-2 numbers per tick. Besides that all seems to be in order.

The little black box for cruise control is unique to the TR. Located under dash on driver side.
