Having Turbo Issues... Am I the only one?

Hello all,

So today I was reflecting on my recent experiences as a newer turbo regal owner and thought I should share. I am having some serious issues here. Since the age of 15 I have owned gbody cars, and I am in love with the great body lines. I'm more of an Oldsmobile guy, but I like them all except for Monte Carlos. They are just a little too mainstream for me. I always just liked to have a nice looking solid car and enjoyed cruising around. I've never been "that guy" driving crazy in his "hot rod."

Three months ago I purchased a very clean '87 Grand National with 91k miles on it. Had the common mods completed, but I had to do a little work to get it up to 2017 standards. New TT Chip, and MAF translator. But here is when the problems started happening. I cannot seem to drive this vehicle at a normal rate of speed. The turbo just spools up and next thing I know I'm doing 100mph and seeing all the other cars in my rear view mirror. When on empty roads I just can't pass up the opportunity to fill the air with white smoke and get side ways laying down solid black lines behind me.

So my question is how do you guys cope with this turbo issue? Will I ever be able to cruise around? I find myself searching ways to mount a turbo on my 84 Hurst/Olds. I need one on everything I own!

Seriously though I learned so much from this web site about how to set up my Buick and have it running right. Mostly without even having to post because there are so many great threads on here.

Thanks for the information,

Mitch

I like your sense of humor. I have the same problem. I found that going to the drags every week helps. Every time I am out driving I am always hunting. Looking for Mustangs, Camaro, Hellcats and anyone else who thinks they are fast. Some people are addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex whatever. I'm addicted to hearing my turbo spool and watching the other cars get smaller in my rear view mirror! (Maybe sex too) lol

Well I recently relocated to Long Island by way of Florida. I am told that there aren't any drag strips around the area so I'll have to safely have fun on the street. But yes it's very entertaining to mess with people in their new Challengers and Camaro SS who think their car is really fast!

Nice car! I have the same problem. I just went to Taco Bell to pick up dinner and was disappointed because there were no stangs out to educate. It is really sad that we can't even drive a mile without hearing that turbo sound. I also like that squeal that comes from the rear tires. Question, how many times can I make them squeal before they have to be replaced? Should they be rotated so I have to replace all four?

I think the best solution is just to replace the tires with every oil change. That way you never have to worry about any issues! Free to light them up!

Yea every time I hear that whistle I just can't help but smile

Nice dash.
Thanks. It's from Poston Buick using all VDO guages. The previous owner had them installed. To me it's better than having the a pillar gauges that kind of stand out too much. I like as clean an interior as possible. And it's nice to know when I'm going over 85mph!

I almost crapped my pants when a state trooper pulled up along side of me Sunday. But it was a decommissioned foxbody leaving a car show. So then we had a little fun running it. But yes I don't want to pay any tickets with money that could be for parts!

I believe it's an aftermarket shorty style non power antenna.

Keep beating on it, it will start to come apart and then you will learn how to start taking it easy. That is once it starts to cost you real money.

I definitely have a ton of respect for and appreciate the car. Last thing I would ever want to do is blow a head gasket or something. As I kid I remember putting together the Revell model '87 GN. Seeing them at car shows wishing I could afford one. Now I'm at a point in my career where ownership was attainable. Trust me I take care of it. It's just fun going fast sometimes!

Ok I'm a purist when it comes to motor swaps... But that's an exception that is very nice. So much better than the common LS swap. I bet you confuse a lot of people in that Hurst!

It confuses a lot more people with the new turbo motor I have in it. The car now runs 10.90's@125+ :)

I bet it does! I love my Hurst, but it just needs a little more "go" under the hood. I drive that when I'm in then mood for a nice cruise lol.

You ever take it to car shows?

I have taken it to car shows. The usual first comment I get is " I didn't know they put turbo V6's in these cars"! Always takes first place in it's class.
