Once in a while when I go wot in second gear i'll get one or two loud backfires from the engine area. What is this and what causes it? And why does it just do it once in a while? Thanks, R.B.

Tired Valve springs?

MR URL:

Didn't see how many miles you have on the car, but I've learned from this site and my car's poor performance was due to weak valve springs. It started with occational popping under boost, and gradually became bad enough to limit me to 1/2 throttle.

As an experament, I added a bottle of CD2 (Frees sticky valves/lifters) to the engine oil. After 2 days of driving, my 150,000 stocker ran almost like new for about a month! Then, over time, returned to my 1/2 throttle limit.

I have a new set of springs on order!

Let us know the milage on your car, and if you have a scantool, what the O2 readings show during a Pop event. If it is leaning way out, your fuel delivery may be at fault (Pump or just the filter) As I have read here, going into second gear and leaning out is a common issue.
