steering shaft seal

I guess that's a good description. It about a foot from the firewall. Any ideas/experience replacing it? Mine is split and while the engine in out I figured this is a good time to do it. No pics at the moment but if nobody understands what part I'm talking about I'll get one. Does it hurt anything if it is not replaced? Thanks, Tim
