Ive heard that the carriers for the chips are hard to come by. I have a friend (computerless) that has 10 or 12 chips with no carriers for them. You could do the pop out thing with them but you take the chance of breaking the carriers or chip pins every time you do that. Would be much better for each to have its own carrier. Ive looked around but couldnt find any listing for them here. Another question is there a part number for them somewhere?

You can easily pop chips out of their carriers using a small pick (or jewlers' screwdriver) and a needle/pin to get the pesky pins apart from the carrier. If you bend a chip pin, just straighten it out with needle nose pliers...they are not THAT delicate.

You are correct however that carriers are not selling for astronomical prices from various vendors.
