I recently went to the dragstrip in my 87 GN. I have a red armstrong chip, 160 therm., K&N, flowmaster, and a test pipe. My best run was a 14.23 at 96. Over the past year i have done a light "restoration" on my car with new radial T/A's, green stripe injectors, and a red armstrong fuel pump. I was sort of disappointed with my time and was hoping to run in the 13's. Should i be satisfied with this time?

PS.. The temperature was around 80 and very humid.

how high is the track? how much boost, was it a street chip? Any knock retard, or 02 readings? How many miles are on the car and have the valve springs been replaced? Overall i would say if it was 16 psi and a street chip you are doing pretty well considering the heat and humidity.

take off those flowcrappers and let your car breathe, i bet that would make a big difference

Those are pretty close to my stock except K&N replacement
filter 87T with 85K miles. At 90 degrees 14.4@95 at 60 it
was 14.1@97. This was with a best 60 foot time of 2.25.

bye, Ed

For your mods, maybe. But appreciate getting these cars deep into the 13's, 12's, 11's is not rocket science. By the same token, it's not free. All depends on what you want to do...

The altitude was about 800ft. My car has 47,000 miles on it and original valve springs. I had about 10 degrees of knock retard. My 60ft thimes were 2.09-2.15. At the launch i spun each time. Should i get some street legal drag slicks? Also, how many pounds of boost should i launch at? I have radial T/A 245/60R-15 on it.

Thanks

ok, I really hope that you weren't seeing 10 deg. of knock retard. If you did, and your car still runs good, and you check your oil to look for a milkshake, then count your blessings. If you are seeing that much retard, sumpin aint right. How much boost were you running and what type of gas?? You need to tune that thing man.
And also, don't go WOT again till you figure out why you are getting so much knock and fix it.

I have four GN's all running flowmasters. The cars run anywhere from 11:10's to 12:20's. All have THDP and cat cutout. When running the cat cut out, I can pick up about 1 tenth on the 12:20 car and 2 tenths on the 11:10 car. Flows aren't as bad as people say. It all depends on the car.

My friends are also running flowmasters. 1 tenth is the average slow down through the flows.

Wr, Do you have a scanmaster? If not get one. 10 degrees of retard is scary. Do that a few times and say good bye to your head gasket:eek:

You should make sure that your car is tuned and running right before you put your foot to the floor.

Lots of knowlegable people here to help.

Good luck, Mike

Need to tune tune tune... the KR is killing your performance, not to mention your motor.
Launch at whatever boost you can hold at the line without spinning, every car is different. With street tires and not Drag radials, low 14's is about right with light mods, tune out the KR and you should make it to the high 13's. You're probably running to much boost causing the KR, or put in some 101 unleaded.

wow that 10 degrees of knock killed the mph big time. Like stated u need to figure out why its knocken. What is your fuel pressure line off and what does it go to WOT (borrow a gauge) Change the fuel filter even if it doesn't have that many miles on it. Check the voltage at the pump and make sure its 13+ if not id recommend a hotwire kit for it. And triple check all the vaccuum lines for holes and cracks. Do you know what your BLMS are at idle? good luck

Wow, your car sound identical to mine, i run 14.02 with a 60 of 2.09 at 98. Just my two cents but it is very difficult to get a basically stock car into the 13's without drag radials. Reds 93 is areally conservative chip in my opinion (but a good one) and you should not have any knock with good gas and stock boost settings. I never get any. Address that issue before you do anything else. Everybody gets all tense about flowmasters, I think the real problem is whats between the test pipe and the muffler. lot of bottlenecks in the stock y pipe.

I have to disagree. It doesn't take anything to get a basically stock car in the 13's. The very first pass I ever made in my stock car was a 13.96, and I didn't know squat. And on the 3rd pass was 13.22. All on 16 psi, a K&N and ModernMusclecar street chip. So If I could do it then anybody can. And it's no lightweight wonder either, I'm 265lbs and the car with me in it goes @3780lbs.

As far as Flowmasters go, I took the ones on my car off last November in favour of the Welded Ultra Flows and picked up 5 psi through the mufflers. Flowmasters or any chambered muffler are crap on a turbo car. They produce way too much backpressure. Been there done that.

Donnie, were those times on street tires? If so, what was your 60' time? Most of the bone stock gn's i see are 14.5 ish on a warm nite. I am very curious. thanks

Late April of '99 on BFG TA's 235-60-15's. Best stock tire time was in July 2000 at the Nationals in BG back when they let the Saturday night crowd still come in and run the Saturday Night Fun Racing and it ran 13.16 @103.5 with a 2.013 60'. My 60' times varied between 1.92 to 2.26 during my 13 second era.

A friend of mine has an 87 Turbo T and it is stock with an ATR exhaust, K&N, STOCK chip. He does have a PTE front mount ( which might be hurting at this point rather than helping ) and on pump gas running 235-60-15 BFG TA's he ran an 8.61 in the 1/8th which is good for 13.51 give or take a tenth. I know the fmic isn't stock, but is anything really BONE stock anymore? The point being a basically stock car which is what we're talking about and his is a very close example.

If you can get your 60' times to between a 1.97 to a 2.05, 13's are right there. You don't have to run a boat load of boost to do it. About 15-16 psi and that's it. But it's all in the 60' no matter what time range your car is at.

hey Donnie, i love your combo you have almost the exact same combo im going for, first off...what do you think about the pt61 that is the Turbo i am wanting, how fast will that turbo take you? do you have any pics of your car? I would really like a chance to talk with you becuase your times for your mods are imressive, at least i think so, thank for any response.

Would you happen to remember what the part number was for the dynomax Ultra flows you are using? The previous owner installed flowmasters on my car and I absolutely hate them. My wife also won't ride in the car because of the drone. Thanks.
