i might be buying a 1985 grand national but i am unsure if i want to since it is not intercooled and you seem to have to put in alot of money to make them fast as the 86's/87's

what do you have to change to run the same setup as the 1986-87

intercooler/turbo/intake/throttlebody/maf/all the pipes/ECM

what else... is there some easy way to do it?

i also hear you have to drill into the block for an oil return hose..??

someone please have a direction they can point me into
i do not know much about hot air but would love to have an intercooled 3.8 SFI turbo!!;)

to convert to 86/87 you havr to change a LOT of stuff over. If you can get an intercooled parts car with the drivetrain intact that's about the only easy way to do it. Plan on spending upwards of $3000 for that. There are some add-on kits (spearco, et.al) they come up on the boards here anywhere from 600-1000. Bottom line it won't be a cheap or simple conversion either way. I bought a spearco kit and the installation looks like it's going to be a nightmare.

ahh that is not what i wanted to hear since i couuld get a deal on this 1985....

oh well thanks for all the info!!

The alternator and a/c compressor would have to be moved to the driver side of the engine as well. The easiest way to convert it would be to pull the engine and put in a LC2. If you want an intercooled tr, get an 86/87.

Depends on how fast U wanna go. There are alot of things U can do to a hotair that are not all that expensive. Does an 86/7 have more potential that a hotair........yes. I'm ok with that though :p

85 hot air

If you buy an 85 hot air, then you do not want an intercooler. The price for the car may be great, but by the time you are done putting in an intercooler and changing this and that, you would have been better off buying an 86-87 for a near identical price after expenses. The hot airs are more of an enthusiasts car, and many experiment with intercoolers for the speed, but I am leaving mine hot, and for that, I am looking to keep the car in low 12's and that's about it. I am happy with the hot air car, and if I wanted to go much faster than 11's, i would have bought an 86 or 87. If you choose to purchase the 85, I would take the challange of putting that motor and tranny into the 11's!!

Good luck...if you dont buy it, drop me an e-mail and I'll take the car off their hands!!!
