Guys, I need to get a starter and Solinoid and wonder if the 1987 Grand National takes a special one like my 70 Z with a heavy duty armature. Is it worth rebuilding?

It's the same damn starter that they put on millions of cars. Maybe $30.00 at NAPA.

Turbo buicks are low compression V6's so there is nothing special about the starter.
If you do a search on starter you will find several discussions about the LT-1 Starter that saves 7lbs or so over the stock starter and another GM starter from the vette that saves even more weight.

I just wondered because the 70 Z starter changed up to a normal 350 low compression engine and has the small armature and the HD Z starter has the large armature, so I rebuilt the original.

According to the service manual it is supposed to be special.

However any good rebuild will work just fine.

Not sure if that particular model is what is in our cars but it most likely is and different from all the other 3.8L ones. 10MT series.

Low current, high rpm.
