Hey all, my 3rd brake light never worked, so I traced the wire to the trunk and found out that it was unplugged. Where exactly does it plug into? I see the box where the tail-lights plug in, but I can't seem to find a fit for it. Does it go somewhere else?

Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks

If your TR is an 84 with a 87 engine, it never came with a 3rd brake light, so there isn't anywhere to plug it in. I believe the 3rd brake light was only on the 87 TR's.

What dave's trying to say is the 1984 GN never came with a 3rd brake light...so my question is how did yours end up with one? hooked up or not.....it shouldnt be there

Third stop light

My car is an 85 GN and it has no third brake light. It does have the cutout in the rear deck support for the bolts for the bracket but that's all. I was under the impression that the '86's were the first cars mandated to have the light.

I'll try to go out there today and check. I have an 87 and the brake light has never worked. I checked the bulb and it is fine. I'll try and trace mine to see where it should plug in. I'll let you know what I find.

it should plug right into the harness on the left side of the trunk and is very close to the bumper... in the little side area..

there is a wire that runs down from the light and plugs right into the harness on the side of it..

my 1987 T has a 3rd brake but my 84 gn with the 87 eng has the light but no where to plug into... very stupid... i think you could just wire it into a brake light... make sure it isnt a turn lamp as well or you will be looking mighty odd on the road

good luck!... you should be able to buy a new wire harness for the tail lights if you really want to do it correctly!

It's the gang plug back in the left rear corner of the trunk. 86 was the first year for 3rd brake lights on US vehicles. The true hookup actually runs all the way to the brake pedal itself (light blue wire). The plug you're looking for is about 7 slots wide. The end 2 closest to the quarter panel are for the 3rd brake light. You may have it or not. There is no separate turn signal wire so without the factory wire to the brake pedal, you're out of luck. Of course you could just run a wire back there from the brake pedal yourself and then hook it up. Wouldn't be alot of trouble really. You can ground it on the factory ground screw which is right there also.

3rd brake light

Mine did not work until I traced it back to the switch located on top of the brake pedal, it was faulty.
Good luck
