Lunched yet another converter, and likely the 2004r (again) Seriously considering a 400 w/a brake/3800 stall non-lock-up. My car sees limited street use, not really concerned about gas milage.
For those that have made the conversion to a 400, any downsides or latent problems? Converter recommendation? Have already researched this swap and it sounds pretty straight forward and bullet-proof. Would like to hear from those who have actually done the swap and drive their cars on the street.

one of the reasons I still have a 200 in my car is the t-brake 400 has a reverse manual set up.....sort of a PITA to drive on the street

I have driven several cars with this setup and wouldn't really want it on the street if you do much driving....

consider, the trans freewheels when coasting and you shouldn't downshift it until stopped

if that doesn't bother you, go for it....the 400 is much stronger and cheaper and there are lots of good converters out there for whatever application you need

most around here run 4000 stall

i would put in a turbo 350 with a manual valve body 400 are heavyer and the 350 has better 1st 2nd 3rd gear ratios . i run 10.80 for 2 years with no problems, with a brake.

switched to a th400 3 years ago and dont regret it at all. I would recomend that you get an undercut 1st gear in it as a stock th400 ratio is higher than the 200. I also run a switch pitch converter{variable stall} which is real fun at the track and the street.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Woody, I had a '67 GTX with a manual valve body hemi T.F. in it and didn't mind it a bit. And this car does not serve as transportation in any sense. I am wanting bullet-proof. (or as close to that as humanly poss) I see your point on the 4000 stall being the converter of choice. That is the way i'll go. I only want to do all of this one (more) time...

Under Pressure, I wondered about a 350 as well and did some research here. You are the only one that has mentined using one so far. Seems everyone goes straight from a 200 to a 400. I agree with you, a 350 is lighter. Also, it has the advantage of less parasitic power loss. Sounds like it's worked for you. Would like to hear from others why this is not generally the trans upgrade of choice. (The obvious answer is probably less torque handling ability)
