I was wondering why my car had turbo lag when my stock D5 was upgraded to a supposedly 3000 modified converter.I have The Precision .63 Housing and I know that the stock GN had the Garret .63 and it spooled real fast for a untouched GN.I noticed more lag from about 1lb of boost to 7lbs with my PTE-44 turbo. The only way the turbo will spool quickly is if I powerbrake it and give it 2500 or so rpm's.I don't want to have to power brake my street car at a traffic light.I am trying to get it to spool to as quick as the Stock Turbo would but without having to powerbraking it.Has anyone here changed exhaust housings and which one did they like better???I know the Precision .63 is better for racing but I don't intend at all to race the car more then once a year if that.I just wonder with my modifications would the Precision Housing or Garret be better for me.I am planning on getting a Vigilante 3200 9.5 single disc lock up converter in the future maybe a long time from now.I was thinking that this would increase spool up but don't know with the Precision housing I can still get it to spool like a stocker at idle without powerbraking it.I wonder if some of you expert turbo regal guys can help me with this decision?? Thanks Ray

Just wondering if anyone has expierence with both .63 exhaust Housings?? Any opinion would be appreciated. Thanks :)

There has to be some one here with a opinion on which Housing they prefer.Remember my car is only a street driven car even with my mods.i appreciate any replies.

I could be wrong but, I believe that the stock garrett .63 is for a t-3 type of turbine. The Precision pte-44 is a t-04 type of turbine. The 44 will outflow the stock turbo but, will require more exhaust energy to do so. Probably why you notice alittle lag. However, you should be better planted in your seat with the 44 when flooring it and that should compensate for the lag.

I think I can answer this question...

Precision housing vs. Garrett housing? Precision housings flow way better than the Garrett...worth 25-30 horse just swapping out housings in some cases...at least that's what they tell me here at work!:D

Maybe-But you didn't answer the ?

If someone works for or has an affiliation with Precicion they might tend to be a little byest.25 to 30 HP more maybe or maybe not.My main concern is getting my turbo spooled like if I am idling at a light and just hit the throttle then what would be the better housing, the Garret or the Precision .63??? I like to have great bottom end response because its funner to drive on the street.

Check out the Hybrids from turbonetics. Spools like a stock and flows like a mother!:D

I have changed many PTE housings back to Garrett on 44/49 turbos as the customers had the same complaint as yours. I stopped using the PTE housing with these turbos due to the bottom end lag.

My experience with many of the same cars, no overall difference at the track using 44/49 turbos with either housing.

I bought my PTE-44 from Precision about 5 months ago.I have a Garret .63 Housing I picked up.As far as me taking off my Precision .63 exhaust Housing do I just unbolt the housing where the bolts are or do I need to send it out to get it machined first??? I have never changed exhaust housings before thats why I ask.

For mostly stock applications, the Garrett will spool better, but the PTE will pull better on the top end. The PTE housing is larger and moves more air, at the sacrifice of slightly slower spooling. This can be taken care of with tuning though!!

When you start to get into the larger exhaust wheel trims (P and larger) you will need a PTE housing. The Garrett housings do not have enough meat in the upper left hand corner where it mates to the downpipe.

I went from a 49 with a Garrett housing to a 44 with a PTE housing. Both with the stock D5. The car got very soft on the bottom end, and pulled hard on the top end. Not the desired result, in my case. So, I confirm your observation.

Most of the bigger Buick Turbo Distributors do not like to use the Garrett housing. The Garrett housing is expensive. The PTE unit is less expensive. They paid to cast new units, so why not support them.

From what I understand even though both housings are designated as .63, the Precision is more like a .75 which would account for your lag. You sound like you are more concerned about street driveability, so even though the Precision will outflow the Garrett top end you may want to consider swapping housings until you uprgrade the converter. Eric, I do support PTE and all the work they do for Buicks, BUT, answering this thread about a 44-49, the Garrettt housing just flat gives better response on the street with a similar to stock build.:) No amount of tuning will make it close to a Garrett.

I own a "few" PTE housings and am waiting for a couple GTQ turbos. In a track application with bigger turbos, PTE housings "shine"!:D

Nick, you seem to know about both housings.I do like the Precision Housing but unless i give it 2500 rpm's or more while power braking it then it has better low end.I like more of a street race type light to light racing kind of performance.Since this is a street driven car but is not stock, but not all that wild either. It has the stock cam but very good race heads and front mount intercooler.Possible, hopefully 11's if and when I ever race it.In your previous post you mention no matter how well you tune with a PTE housing it still won't compare with the Garret .63 housing. Now down the road maybe 2 or 3 years i might upgrade to a 3200 9.5 single disc lock up Vigilante converter.Would this converter make the car spool from a dead stop with a Precision housing?? Thanks Realspool

In my opinion, no.

We have installed 3000 stall converters with the PTE 44/49 and still the customers were not satisified. Until I put on a Garrett housing, did it give them the street response they wanted. These cars can run high 11's.

For stoplight-to-stoplight performance, a stock turbo is hard to beat. Minor mods, good street tires, it is killer. Go for 2 stoplights, a bigger turbo, more mods, it will blow by you then.:)

Nick,Thats what I wanted to know.If I upgraded my stall converter and spend 750$ and still was not happy with the lack of bottom end response.I am very close to taking my PTE-44 off and putting a Garrett Housing on it.Do I just unbolt the housing with the turbo on the car before taking the whole housing at the bottom where the 3 studs are??I mean where the top of the housing meets the downpipe but on the opposite side??When i install the Garrett housing do i just bolt it on to my 44 turbo or do i have to send it out to get machined? Thanks Alot Ray

If your Garrett housing is off a stock turbo, it must be machined for the TE-44.

REALSPOOL I'm with you; I currently have a stock garret housing at limit being machined for a 49.
My bottom end was way too soft for street driving I will post my track results when I install my garret housing.

Sam
