The 86 I am buying has a few mods that I need you well informed BUICK runners to explain to me. (please tell me what everything is with a question mark and if it is good to have.) The GN has an afrp ?, walbro intank pump..I know this is good, but I am listing everything and want opinions on all. cold air ind. w K&N, I know it gets hot under the hood ?, solid maf tube?, 42.5lb hr 009 injectors ?, 93 chip 100 chip???????, duttweiler big neck intercooler (is this the whole intercooler or just a large tube connector?) 160 degree thermostat?, PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS ONE...adjustable wastegate actuator..does this mean I have to constantly adjust the turbo boost???? hooker catback exhaust???? is it loud?, THANK YOU FOR ANY INSIGHT.
Sicerely, Bryan:D

AFPR means Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Walbro pumps are very good, you however do not list which one.

Cold Air kit depending on the maker is not a bad Idea.

K&N is a very good upgrade like the others above.

Solid MAF Tube, the pipe between the MAF sensor and the Turbo is a solid piece of pipe. The original had a paper flex hose here. Also a good upgrade.

42.5 009 Injectors, These are the fuel injectors that supply fuel to the intake just before the head. The double O nine injectors as they are called are a very good injector with the correct chip. These fit well with the above combo of items you mention.

93 and 100 chip. The ECM of these vehicles uses a prom chip that is removable. You can install different chips into the ECM very easily. The two numbers indicated are the octane that the chips are setup for. You have not mentioned who the manufacture of these chips are so kind of hard to say exactly but if the person has both of these then I would say you are good to go. The 100 octane chip would be used with race type fules only. The 93 would be a street chip for use with High octane pump gas only. The chip will modify computer controlled Fuel, Timing and Boost settings. This is basically the heart of your computer controlled system. When these are right the car will run amazingly. When wrong you can have major headaches.

Big Neck, this item is used on stock intercoolers to provide a larger and smoother radius to the core of the intercooler from the turbocharger. This helps to reduce restriction and increase flow to the intercooler. Very good upgrade when properly installed.

The 160 thermostat opens the cooling system to flow at 160 degrees. Anytime a TR is going to be modified, this along with the fuel pump is a necessity. Good upgrade.

Adjustable wastegate actuator. This is a threaded item under the turbo that controls the boost. You shorten the rod more boost, lenghten the rod less boost. This is used for tunning your car to the conditions fuel and performance. Very good upgrade. No the ECM will still control the boost to a certain level. This is used for fine tunning.

Hooker exhaust. Very good system breathes well. It is not loud and is a very good system for the price.

Alot of reading hope it helps.

Thank You M-60

I appreciate all of the feed back but am still confused on the chips. 93 chip & 100 chip are they both in place or is just one at a time ?
Thanks, Bryan:D

Chips are plugged into the ECM one at a time. The 93 chip is programmed for 93 Octane and the 100 chip is programmed for 100 octane. Using a 100 chip with lower (ie 87 octane) octane can cause severe detonation and broken parts. NOT GOOD.

I'd recommend that you stay with the 93 until you get a handle on tuning it with a scan tool. You don't want to blow a head gasket or worse break a crankshaft while your "playing"..

Good Luck!

They are 2 different chips. Run the 93 for 93 octane gas, and run the 100 for 100+ octane gas. The 100 is also a good chip to run when running alcohol injection.

Thank you all very much. I have had several modded mustangs and a 71 barracuda with a 383 pistol grip shifter but have always loved the Buick GN, It is sofisticated, looks great and surprises the hell out of people when boosted!!!! I am going to pick it up this weekend if everything checks out.

I would find out who made the chips. This will make a big difference in tunning the car. One thing not mentioned that I should have is to get yourself a scantool. This item will save your bacon when used correctly. If you do not have one get one. There are several made primarily for the turbo cars, one of these is what I would get.
