My 87 gn runs good. Has an adjustable fuel press. reg. set at 44 lbs (as reccommended by the guy who sold me the thrasher 93 chip) a 160 deg. stat, and is otherwise stock. It has 47,000 km's on it. Here's the problem. the engine runs smooth at startup, and drives ok. when i bring it home after a leisurely cruise, and an occasional W.O.T. , it sounds like it's making a noise in the bottom end, but i'm not exactly sure where it's coming from. Would lack of fuel do this? i hope it's not serious...:( the next time i start it up again after it cools down, the noise is gone. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I am not a turbo V-6 expert but the first thing I would do is to hook up an oil pressure gauge and see what kind of oil pressure you are running. Also try to figure out more closely the specific area the knock is coming from.
Step by step process. After that, the picture will become clearer.

If it truly is a bottom end noise it will get worse fast. It will take your turbo with it. If you catch it early enough, you might be able to save your crank. Mine was a total loss - crank and turbo bad. I wouldn't run it anymore other than to try discern where the noise is coming from. You need to drop the pan and see what's going on.

My GN has low miles and has always made what I consider to be "bottom end" noise.

I have listened to many other TR's and guess what....they all make this noise.
It kind of sounds like a lifter..or maybe loud injectors.

I even had one guy tell me that he heard a GNX with less than 1k miles on it and it was making the same noies.

Turns out it is just the exhust pulses being heard through the thin-walled headers and crossover pipe.

I was told nothing to worry about and indeed the car runs fine. It does seem a bit louder to me once the car has warmed up but the pipes would be different then as opposed to when they are fresh and cold.

Just my 02.

I have heard that excessive rod side clearance will make a noise like a lifter.
