I just installed to VDO gauges from Kirban. A oil pressure and water temp. Question that I have now is how does the computer monitor water temp? I was told that to run a 160 degree thermostat I would need a chip to tell the computer that it was not running cold. If I removed the stock temp sender and replaced it with one from VDO then how does the computer monitor water temp. Am I wrong about something or what?

I believe the ECM gets it's info from the coolant temperature sensor (CTS). Gauge sending unit is a different item. Someone will correct me if I'm mistakened..:D

There are 3 temp. senders/sensors on the Buick.

If you removed the right one wire one you shouldn't have a problem.

If you removed a 2 wire sender with black and yellow wires you will have a problem.

I removed the sensor that was near the top of the manifold, passenger side near middle. Actualy there were no wires at all connected to it or the oil sensor on the front bottom of the engine. The water sensor is located near the upper radiator hose.

See if this is helpful...scanned for you out of GM Parts illustration manual.

Mickey,

I looked at the diagram and see #73 looks to be one of the sensors. I was told the sensor is above #73 and sits on top of the manifold. That one also has a single green wire attached. Which one is the proper one to replace?

There are 3 temp snesors.

Drivers side front top of intake. Has 1 green wire. This is the fan temp switch.

Drivers side front of intake. Has 2 wires going to it one black one yellow. Thi is the ECM temp sensor.

Passenger Side front using 1 wire. This is for the idiot lite. This is usually the one I replace for my gauges.

#73 sensor, clnt temp
#75 switch, clnt temp
My bad...forgot to label #91, switch, fan temp
Now you can identify all three...
