Would you buy a car without looking at it??
I wouldn't...
Very skeptic right now....

Let me know what you think of this....

I got, what seems to be a serious offer on my mustang.
Exchanged a few PM's with the 'buyers' son in law, on a mustang forum.
He is a longtime board member, many posts, long list of mods in sig, etc.
so it wasn't just some random nigerian scammer who just signed up to the board...

They didn't ask any questions about the car, they have not seen the car
aside from pictures, and know no information from the little I wrote in the ad..
Granted the car is like new with 2k miles, so there is really little if anything
that could possibly be wrong with it, but still, to not even look at it??

I spoke with the buyer today. He's from NY, I'm in NJ.
He says that the bank wants a lot of documentation before they will give him a check, due to the fact the car is out of state.

He wants me to send him:
A bill of sale with signature.
Window sticker, or list of options.
Current mileage.
VIN #
Year Make and Model.
Copy of title.
Copy of insurance.
Copy of registration.

He seems ready to buy it pretty much sight unseen.
Does this seem strange to you??

I've never done a car sale with a bank involved,
so I guess wanting all this paperwork can be legit.

This whole thing seems strange with someone wanting to buy a car for 21k
without looking at it and sending info like copy of title etc....

Here is what he will do "if" you sent him that info. Apply for another title in his name. With all that paper work from you it would be very easy to do. Then he will come to your house with a police escort and take "his" car from you. I've seen people get screwed like that before. They just pray on trusting people. Tell him to show up with a bank check and or cash and you'll handle all those things at "your" notary. That will make him go away.

Being that he is a long time member he might be legit. I would not send him that information though. Explain why and if he is serious about the car then he will understand. If he starts flaking out then oh well, see ya. Get the number of his bank and talk to them and find out what they actually want (of course make sure it is a real bank though). There may be a sister branch near you that can look at the car and verify it for his bank. If your car is still financed then you can have his bank talk to your bank.

1) First rule my dad taught me, never buy a car without a visual inspection and test drive. PERIOD!

2) Second rule my dad taught me, rule #1 applies to women as well:biggrin:

****in a!
Had a feeling something like that could happen.
THANKS

Why would a bank want your insurance and registration info?

Wait, maybe he's also taking out a loan for it in your name too.

My in-laws own a car dealership and my wife manages it for them. It sounds like it could be legit, but my advice would be to ask the guy for his banks contact number and ask for the name of the loan officer he has been working with, and contact the bank yourself. That way when you fax stuff it will go to the bank and not the individual. Of course you can verify the number he gives you through whitepages or some other online phone directory just to be sure.

Each bank or credit union has their own policies when applying for a loan. Insurance and reg info makes no sense tho. The rest is feasable.

Tell him to send you a non refundable deposit and you can send the documents. Tell him there are other offers and if he is serious then send a deposit. Pretty simple actually.

I have bought cars without looking at them or driving them. Stupid? Yes! But I have done it. Never again tho but that dosent mean it's a scam. Doesn't mean it isn't either.

Thanks for all the input guys, appreciate it.

I never really dealt with banks with a buyer,
so was all sorts of confused after talking to this guy...

Yeah it just seemed like, the bank/or he, was wanting WAY too much info, coupled with not asking to see the car.

I can almost believe someone buying it without seeing it because the mileage and it mint, and im willing to sell it for 1g over the dealer tradein offers I got, so great deal for him.

The fact that the middleman is a 5year member at the board, many posts, modded car in sig...
If he was part of an auto theft operation, would prob be outted by now, no? That also had me thinking it *might* be legit.

But the document requests and not asking to see the car.....
I'll ask to speak to his bank directly.
I guess it's worth a shot if it is possibly legit.
VERY hard to sell a car these days...
