Looking to buy either a Movado or a Tag in the near future and trying to do a little research....price, how to spot a fake etc...
Any resources out there?

Yea, the ones you buy off of a guy on a corner are fakes:D :D

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I love the Rolex my father in law gave me when I got married.

It came with a hologram on the back of it and all kinds of papers.
I suppose they all can be forged but if you go to the manufacturers website they will send you to authorized dealers.

I don't know much about the other makes but I was sure to call my insurance company to get the extra insurance on it though so I don't have to be so nervous wearing such an expensive watch.

I have 2 older blue faced Tag Professional 200's from the 1980's and love them.

If you want to buy real go to a jeweler or have the watch in question inspected by a jeweler. In the seller does not want to do this if you pay to have it inspected stay away.

The fakes out can be so natsy allmost any one can tell it's not real but I have seen a few that were supper accurate usualy these were swiss made rolex replicas.

The papers can be forged, in fact one place sells fake papers and the box. The hologram stick is easy to fake as well.

And as far as rolex replicas just cause the hands sweeps does not mean it's real. I have seen MANY fake rolex watchs with a jeweled movment.

www.1911.com
Good fireaarms site in general, and 1911 specifically.
Also has a section for collectible timepieces and watches.

i have been buying watches for a long time and all of them have been from www.bluedial.com i have gotten nothing but quality and they are cheaper than everyone else the cheap price isnt listed for all their items so for the cheap price "hilight" (click and drag the mouse pointer) the area around the price and it ill show you the actuial price a lot of the watch manifacturers wont let them advertise that cheap of prices so its their way around it

you may be ok buying a Tag over the internet, but be sure and read all the fineprint....most "good deal" nice watches sold on the internet have the serial numbers removed and no factory warranty.......

I have a friend that bought a Tag via the internet, it quit, and the factory repair facility won't touch it

if buying something like Rolex, don't even think about buying anything (new) unless from an authorized dealer....there are no "good deals" on Rolex and no one (legitimate) sells them on the internet...they are probably the most protected fair traded item in the world.......thus, they tend to hold their value ( the two I bought over 20 years ago are worth about double today what I paid for them....)

if buying used, have it looked at by an authorized dealer

I am a Pawnbroker in Detroit, and I have seen them all! There are a ton of replica Movados, Tags, Rolex, Breitling...ect The fakes are getting so good, that it takes more than a trained eye to spot one. I have seen Rolex President, and gold submariners that are solid 18k gold, but fakes... They come with boxes, papers, stickers on the back and EVEN RECIPTS! Good rule of thumb, if it sounds too good to be true, IT PROBIBLY IS!

Don't be afraid to check the local pawnshops for good deals on watches, there are a lot of quality watches that don't have a very good resale value, or just wont sell in the area (suburban watch in the ghetto) that you can get a really good deal on.

If you are looking for a Movado, I can get any new one and sell it for 30% below retail, with full warranty. I don't stock many of them, but I can get any style. I can pretty much get any of the high line watches new or used for a discounted price.

If you find a make and style, shoot me an e-mail and see if I can't get you a better price.

another thot....check your local Costco or Sams....they do sometimes carry stuff like Tag, Omega, Movado, and have competitive prices and legit warranties

(Seamaster chrono $1195 at local Costco....for example)

ok i have alot of watches (could have bought a GNX with the cost of them all together but nevertheless)

As for Movado's the easiest way to tell a fake is it would have a sedond hand. MOST (not all) But almost every movado has no second hand, ALSO movados are thin watches if you want i will locate a fake in manhattan and take some pics of mine next to it.

s for Tag's the fakes have round/circle/dots as numerals, when the original ones dont. Also the bottom of the originals (face) says something like Swiss Made and the fakes say Swiss Swiss or something like that.

and rolex's are the easiest..... no FAKE rolex i have ever seen has the magnifying glass on the face, its usually just a bubble glass not a magnifying glass. and pay attn to the sweep, the fakes have a fast tick not a sweep (tough to notice if your not sure)

if you need pics of any watches or have any q's let me know in a mail or PM

arista5, there are no easy ways to spot a good fake besides taking it apart. there are a lot of higher dollar copies. The $15 gas station watches are easy to pick out.

I have seen MANY Movado fakes and only a handfull have had second hands.

Tags make so mant different numbers and hour markers.

All good Rolex copies will have a magnifying glass at the hour. I have seen some $2000-$3000 copies of a $20,000 watch that if you didnt take it apart, you would never tell the difference even with both in your hands.

I wish it were that easy to tell, but if it were i may be out of job.:D

FYI my 2 cents:

My mom was in the jewlery industry for about 30 years.
The markup is incredible as you would know being a smart guy.

You did not mention but I assume you are talking NEW watches.

Cause I have an old movado 18k & omega 18k wristwatches. buying these can be even more tricky because of bad watch dealers or antique jewlery dealers.

I want to buy a fake Breitling.....stupid question and sites on the net that sell knockoffs? Could be a stupid question as it's probably not a good idea to hawk knockoffs on the net, but thought I'd ask anyway.

Thanks

I just checked that bluedial site for a watch I have been pricing and it was a great deal even cheaper then worldofwatches.com the only thing is I didn't see no special price when i highligted just the you pay price.

Some good info guys. Thanks. I didn't think this thread had gotten any action, the emailer must not be working on the site again.
