COUPLE OF GUYS AROUND HERE RUN THE FLOWMASTERS ON THEIR CARS . THE 2 CHAMBER VERSION'S, THEY SOUND GOOD. BUT THERE IS A RUMOR IN THE TR COMMUNITY THAT THEY "BY CHAMBER DESIGN" WILL RESTRICT FLOW. THERE IS ONE GUY WHO HAS ALL THE RIGHT STUFF ON HIS CAR BUT DOES NOT RUN THE USUAL NUMBERS FOR A TR. THINK ITS HIS 2 CHAMBERS??? HE HAS A 3" DP ALREADY TOO. THOUGHT I WOULD ASK FOR HIM AN SEE IF ANY OF YOU GUYS HAVE RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT ... THANKS

Its long been known that a baffled design as the flowmaster will disrupt exhaust flow in a turbo car. This used to be true only for TRs but as the turbo Mustang market has grown , they have also found this to apply to their cars too.

Absolutely! What needs to be reinforced is the fact that things in the exhaust arena are completely different when turbo charging is used as opposed to what's cool in the N/A (normally aspirated) world.

The turbo does all the work. And uses exhuast gasses to do so. One of the most important things to remember is, THERE MUST BE NO, I REPEAT NO POST TURBO BACKPRESSURE/RESTRICTIONS.

Now, with that said, in the real world that's almost impossible to accomplish, however, there are ways to keep post turbo backpressure to a minimum.

Large piping (as practical)
smooth large radius mandrel bends
straight through (non chambered) mufflers if you're using muffs.

Even with a good flowing exhaust system you can see how much of a difference can be had, particularly if you're running a THDP. Just remove whatever is between the THDP and the exhaust pipe and run it open like that for a little while. Talk about added performance!!
TALK ABOUT NOISE!!!!
Neet turbo whistle too ;)

Closing comment: On turbo'd cars, yes, Flowmaster are a hinderance, any chambered muffler would be.

So...the "Aerochamber" mufflers that now come with the Hooker kit are a poor choice for a TR??

The aerochamber is no where near the flowmaster design. The aerochamber has a large redirectioning funnel along with a very large expansion area with sound deadening material almost a straight through design, if you looked through one.The aerochamber would never be anywhere as restrictive as a Flowmonster.

The term Chambered is used to describe 2 different things on both mufflers.

HTH

i tooker the aerochambers off my my hooker cat back:D the car aint that loud and its got a nice v8 rumble until i get on the gas and then all you can hear is the turbo

So what is the best muffler? What are you guys running? I see some guys are running 3 mufflers how does that affect back pressure?

How loud would my car be with no cat and no muffler's. I have a race pipe from ATR coming and I am currently running Dynomax mufflers with Kenne Bell exhaust.

Would my car be so loud the pigs would be wanting to pull me over! I dont have emissions testing:cool:

Or is this setup good enough, will my mufflers make that big of a difference????
Stock headers
Postons crossover
Stock up and down pipes
Stock turbo
Kenne Bell exhaust with dynomax mufflers
ATR race pipe............

:D Nick

Not too loud at all....

I have been running no cat/no mufflers on my car about 2 years now. The car has a really deep V-8 type sound to it just sitting there idleing(sp). But you mash the loud pedal she lets out an awesome whistle that usually freaks out who I am playing with. And just normal driving you hear the turbo really good with little or no boost reading on the gauge. Plus....the weight savings of no muffler has to be good for something! ;)

I know that with an open dump pipe exiting under my car it was rather obnoxious, but not nearly as bad as a V8 with open headers (not even comparable). I hated the drone I got from it at normal cruising speeds so I put it all back together. I would assume it would be much more livable if it exited out the rear with just straight pipes all the way back, but I havent heard that setup personally. HTH

Thanks for the replys:D
I just took my high flow cat off the car tonight and then started the car:eek:    DAMN!!!! These things sound awesome, wish i had a dump pipe to play with people;)

I took the cat off and replaced it with my ATR Race pipe. I can notice a little difference in the sound but not much.....is the high flow cat all that restrictive:confused:  I seemed like the car spooled up a little better after the cat was taken off. And i can feel a better response when i get on the gas....i would have to say it probably add a few ponys over having the high flow cat.....next I definetly want to try and take the mufflers off.......and see how she sounds......will this add anymore power to the beast.........:D

What does a cracked header sound like compared to a donut gasket between the crossover and header pipe...........passenger side of my car.........it sounds like a donut gasket just like my truck use to have......?

One more question how good our Dynomax mufflers on our cars??

sorry for the long post...........QUIKTURBO i think you have me convinced to run some straight pipe, cant wait to hear my car then:D

I have read comments on Flowmasters for several years now and I had a 3" Conley exaust with Flowmasters for about 7 years. Just replaced the system for weight savings and the fact system had a few (too many) holes .
Car would run 10.65 with dump open. With dump closed car would still run 10. 80s.
I personally had good results with Flowmasters. Maybe some other mufflers would have done better, but I like the sound and they were not too loud.

I'm running a pair of stainless Magnaflows and they are dead quiet at idle, but get on it and it give a nice smooth tone that really lets the turbo howl. I've had several people tell me that my car has one of the loudest turbo whistles they have heard from a stock car. It must be that good ol ATR ram air kit.
