Basic Valve Cover Question

Valve covers are off (can't remember how, as I always block out unpleasant stuff) and now have them all painted up.
What do I have to remove so I can get them back on without buggering up the pretty new paint?
There must be a few tricks to this.

I would use 2" 3M masking tape. Either blue or green. Put the tape on before you install or remove your covers. Once installed remove the tape.
