I need an exhaust for my car and was wondering what exhaust was the quietest? I wanna sound like I have nothing done to my car. I have seen the Cotton's special of their single shot for under $300. I heard they were kinda loud though. Any suggestions, or comments on sound, quality, and best bang for the buck would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dad had a muffler shop put a monte carlo exhaust on my car before I bought it, 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" pipe, it's a dual from the cat on back, and he had them bend the pipes to exit in stock location. -VERY- affordable, was insanely cheap. Mellow sound, deeper pitch but still as quiet as stock. Was some Butt Dyno Seat Of The Pants (BDSOTP) difference too, but no times to tell you how much there really was. Heard a lot of good things about the ATR dual 2.5" too.

The stock one is probably the only quiet one. All the free flowing ones are going to be louder than stock and probably have a drone somewhere.

Do a search. This has been discussed a gazillion times.

Good luck choosing.

BTW, I have the Hooker catback with the aerochamber muffs. I also have a 3" dynomax ultraflo in place of the cat. And the car is still too loud for my nancy ears.

I have the ATR 2.5 system with pitbull muffs.

I think it is pretty quiet. No drone for me. At cruise on the highway you can hear the muffs and some people might call that a drone but really isn't.

When you drive around town the exhaust note changes all the time as you are varying your speed. On the freeway you are going a fairly constant speed so you just hear the one tone for a long time.

I have a sound clip of my car idling in the driveway and a video of me pulling out of the garage. Both offer some hint of what a stock motor with 3" DP, not cat, and 2.5 ATR sound like.

If anyone wants them, drop me an email and I can send them. Each is about 600k

The ATR singleshot is louder that my 2 1/2 SS ATR exhaust with the SS. Pitbulls.

If I was going to do it over again I would call Jack Cotton and get his version of the 3" single shot... Nice and quite.

Any atr system isn't going to be cheap. If you want a good system for a cheap price go for the hooker setup. You can put another muffler where the cat is to quiet it down even more.

The Hooker system is a pretty good deal, the only draw back I've found with it on my car is that at the split under the passenger seat it seems to ride a little too close to the pan.
Other than that, good price and for an aluminized system has held up well sitting in the shop...;)

I REALLY REALLY DONT WANT ANYONE TO TAKE OFFENSE TO THIS STATEMENT, PLEASE!!!!!!!! THIS IS MY OPINION.

how the hell can you have a race car that is "quiet"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now, I am a v-8 fan (used to be a f'body nut) and i loved nothing more than to turn the key and hear a god awful, louder than hell GROWWWWWWWWWWWWL!!!!!!!! coming from the back of my car! When i started that baby up, everyone would look and say holy ****! that thing sounds bad ass!!! I don't know how any of you guys can run a so called "muscle car" without the rumble that is always associated with it! Now I know you guys are probably going for the stealth approach, but our cars, in my opinion don't look at all like your everyday regal. I happen to think it just LOOKS like a drag racing machine, so I don't think you are fooling anyone with a quiet exhaust. They are YOUR cars, so do what you want with them, but I know on MY race car, I will always run the loudest damn exhaust that is available for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So look out ricers, you're gonna hear my turbo whistlin' and my exhaust rumblin' before you ever see my car, and long after I have blown by you. Just had to get that off my chest. Later.

I see your point....but.... when going on trips that are 30-45 min. one way several times a month it gets annoying listening to that loud exhaust. It sure turns heads when my car comes down the street ( I run just an ATR 3" d/p ) but listening to it every day gets old...quick. I just wanted a quieter exhaust to let that turbo be heard loud and clear rather than be drowned out by an open exhaust.

How about stock with an electric cutout?

gofastr,

Have you figured out how to make it sound like it is an 8?

Or is it just a loud 6?

I love my GN, but would love to here that V-8 rumble and roar.

I have the 2.5" Hooker's and they are better than stock, but not magical tone transformers. lol

If you are looking for loud, I use a 3" Edelbrock that exits right under the passenger seat. It's too much for me (I guess I'm gettin old), but it puts my last 3 F-bodies to shame in the rumble department. Real nice around town 'cept when I pass the cop shop, and it actually rattles my house windows at idle. You don't want to drive it long down the freeway though.

Jebedias did you get those other problems fixed that you were having about a month ago?

If quiet is the main thing, Lyonsd is right. Go stock with an electric cutout

Blackbuick,

Not yet. My ignition system checks out. I'm hooking up a fuel pressure guage this week and see what it does.
BTW, saw your website...nice ;)

Best bang for your buck, and best sound by far, is WIDE OPEN ;)

I cut mine off at the downpipe, just dumps right under the floor, and it sounds so much better. a little drone around 1200 to 1400 RPM, but at cruising speeds its fine, it quiets out and is no louder than it is with the exhaust hooked up, which surprised me. Dont With the cat gutted and hangin off the DP, it was louder, like a magnifying chamber or somethin.

Asside from open, i have a 3 inch dual system from the cat back with dynomax super turbo mufflers, believe its a torque tech system, best looking exhaust at the exit that ive seen. perfect exit angle and perfect length and cut. Also, its pretty quiet, actually, VERY quiet outside the car, but sounds good. when i go to buick meets, and ran my car, it was the quietest car goin down the dragstrip, cant hear anything. Other TRs/GNs just drown mine in noise, which i like, but some like it quiet. Interior does resonate a slight bit at 1700 RPM with the exhaust hooked up, otherwise its quiet inside too.

Best exhaust sound bang for the buk

What-if not to reduce the sound/drone-was Buicks purpose of adding a couple resonators to the GNX exhaust system?

Anyone know of a "today automobile" application that uses resonators? I don't remember ever a thread about installing resonators to quiet the engine down. Reckon they would work??

torque tech 2 1/2 duels with super turbo mufflers..is very quiet even with gutted cat.

thats what I had on my car now I have atr single on it and looking to go back to duels.

with the duels and dynomax super turbo's I could go by friends houses at 20+# of boost and they never heard me

I'm going to put a 3" super turbo on my single shot and see if it gets better but I dont like it even tho alot of my friends say it sounds good I like it quiet.

nothin like a 10 second car you cant hear running ;)
