On my 87 GN I have the stock good year tires. The car only has 26,000 miles on it. The tires are hard and I can pretty much light them up anywhere anytime. The tires need to be replaced, if I have to do a panic stop the car will just lock them up and slide.

So here's the pitch, what size will offer good handling and good traction? My car does the one wheel peel a fair bit, man I need a posi. I'm not a big fan of Khumo's as I have them on my Z24 and they don't hook up very well.

I would like to keep the speedo in check and not have the car sit 5" high in the rear.

235/60's will provide better handling than stock and the Speedo will read the same.

Putting 255/60's in back will help reduce wheel spin on the street at the expense of the speedo reading a couple mph slow.

275/60 Drag Radials (nitto or BFG or the new MT) will provide the ultimate in radial tire tration, but will likely require a small (1/4" to 5/16") spacer to keep the tire off the frame. Again, the speedo will read, slower than stock, about 5 mph at 70 mph.

What about 275/50 Drag radials? I bought a set but haven't put them on yet, as I am painting my fake GNX Trans -am wheels. Are the 50's as likely to rub the frame rails?

Iam running that exact size 275/50/15's in the rear on a 15x8 weld pro star my back spacing was a lil off so iam runnin a 1/4" spacer to keep them off the frame. good tire looks great but unless you smoke them before launching you really want see to much difference but when you heat them up nice and launch i almost picked up the front in the st. have a pic of it but have no way of getting it posted sorry, good tire i say go for that. iam also only running 28lbs in the tires for a lil more surface area.

275/50's rub the frame rails more than the 60's, don't fit a 7" rim as well as the 60's and can limit your trap speeds in the 1/4 mile if your car is mid 12's or quicker.

i will be purchasing some 275/50's here soon. i saw a pic of them mounted on stock 87 GN rims and they looked very nice. i asked the owner how much back spacing he used and he said 1/4 and he gets no rubbing.
i too need a posi. my car is pretty much stock and did a 16.7 @ 91 mph. best is 14.7 @ 95 (stock). i had about 6 runs in that night and that was my very last run (the 16.7). i wanted to have a little fun and decided to launch around 2,000rpm instead of the boring idle launch. i got about 20 feet past the light and once the turbo hit full boost i roasted my right tire all the way to the 1/8th mile mark! since all the spectators are on my right side it looked pretty cool. lol.
