Normal is 60-90 systolic and 120-140 diastolic, lower when younger, and higher when older. Other than medication there is no 'quick' way that I'm aware of which would be medically approved. Exercise, proper diet, staying off the bottle, genetics all play a role. You may want to consult with your family doctor. :)

I have high blook pressure problems. Been on at least six blood pressure medication studies, so:

1) When getting your BP taken, Don't Talk. Don't be distracted, stay focused.
2) When getting your BP taken, Don't Cross Your Legs!!!
3) Stay off salt and other sodium containing compounds.
4) Use Lite Salt if you must flavor your foods.
5) Drink plenty of water, until about 12 or so hours before the BP test.
6) RELAX!!!! Don't look at the Nurse! Take a deep breath.
7) Try to lose a couple of pounds before the test.

My Doctor used to have a fantastic looking Nurse. I told her that she was distracting me when she took my BP. So, we did a test. I looked away and closed my eyes. My BP went down a couple of points. When she would touch me (you know what I am talking about, bending over and all) my BP went back up. I have as bad a case of white coat syndrome as you can imagine. And, I used to work, as a volunteer, in the ER at Carolinas Medical Center at Charlotte. If you can find some diuretics, take them until about 12 hours before the test.

Let us know what you did and what the resullts were.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

Fine a friend with 50 MG of Atenolol and take one before hand lol... JUST KIDDING!!!!!

4 steps

quickly cut back on sodium is an idea (its Hereditary in the men in my family) other than that there is no real way but try this

1. eat dark chocolate
2. increase potassium intake
3. Ditch the Regal and Walk and exercise (kinds sucks sometimes:biggrin:)
walk to work one day or somewhere nearby
4. DRINK WATER!!! h20 is your friend plus the majority of your body is water

(i'm glad i paid attention in health and nutritio class:redface:)

Know of any way to lower it quickly? I got a test in seven days.
Drink a lot of water, eat less than 50mg/day sodium, cut carbs down to less than 100g/day. Drink even more water. You should lose about 5-7% of your bodyweight in water in a week and your bp will drop 10-15%. Ive lost 21lbs in under 3 weeks with a majority of it in the last 48hrs for weigh ins and my bp a was always best after the water regimen and the reduced soduim/carbs

Blood Pressure

You're going to think I'm crazy, but for a quick test such as a physical for sports, pilot certificate, or employment, viagra will lower your blood pressure significantly and almost instantly. Very temporary, but that's what you want, yes? Guess how I know this?

Thanks guys. I’m going to try many of the suggestions. I only got seven days so we will see what happens. My brother in law has to take a physical twice a year for his job and he has high blood pressure. He has always eaten lots of cantaloupe prior to the test and swears it lowers your numbers drastically. I called my sister to find out how much he eats how far in advance. Well she recently found out that in addition to eating the cantaloupe he also takes a few of his father’s blood pressure pills. Too funny. So much for the cantaloupe idea.

I checked it tonight at the grocery store and it was 167/97. I then drove straight home and took the dog for a thirty minute run. My wife is preparing some nutritional food for dinner. I got to get this down!

Damn!!!! Dude... That's a terribly dangerous level!!

BP that high can cause a "laundry list" of various other health issues.

You need to get to the doctor and get on some BP meds. Probably take more than one with that level.

Mine was in the 150's over 90's. I've gone from one to two types of BP meds, and now enjoying BP's in the 117 over 70 range.

You need to go see a doctor immediately. You don't need to be going for a run until you get that pressure down. First thing is bring the BP down and then start addressing the causes for the high level.

My experience has been that those electronic blood pressure machines read higher than when done manually by a qualified technician using a stethoscope.

Stay away from exercise just before the BP test. The fuel pump died on my 1971 Camaro years ago on the way to work and I had to push it 1 1/2 blocks on the day they gave our monthly BP tests. My BP normally was VERY good, but the nurse's eyes got REALLY big and called the doctor over to retest me. He said I was about to explode. Note to self, don't push 70's muscle car by yourself before BP test !!

Cut out all salt for the next week, drink plenty of water to flush out the salt out of your body. Close your eyes and take deep, slow breaths during the tests. No alcohol or peperoni pizza.

Good luck with the test. It would be a good idea to see a doctor for advice on managing your BP.

Might lower your blood pressure but not the pressure "elsewhere" might be a bit awkward walking in for the test with a big bulge in your pants.

Bob, I hope you didn't have a physical after Viagra!! I can only imagne what the Doc would think or say after telling you to drop your trousers...ha!!

I can keep mine about 3-5 points lower by taking a mini aspirin every other or every 3rd day. Seems if I take them every day with the advil I am on for my neck issues, I tend to bleed more whan I shave & get cuts etc. Usually, for normal people, a mini aspirin every day is fine.

Check out GNC (vitamin store) they have heart health pill packs. Main item is fish oil suppliment, good for the heart & could drop it a little more.

The low salt is probably the most important one, and read labels, it's hiding in all kinds of stuff you wouldn't imagine!!! DO a search on low salt foods & high salt foods, it even comes naturally in stuff.

Either way, after you get your slightly improved numbers for your short term needs, go back to the doctor & get it taken again under normal circumstances. SOunds like you definitely need to get on meds before it's too late. Probably need to try 2-3 before you find one your body tolerates well. No magic one for all on this deal. I lost weight & mine still stayed up, guess it's the getting old deal.

There is also some deal with a spot on the top of your head that when rubbed can lower the pressure too (says my old muscle therapy person).

Personally, I would eat some low salt fish the night before with lots of water, go for a massage first thing in the am, and then get it taken. Leave yourself 5-10 min to calm down in waiting room too, even the walk in can elevate it a little. And think of old fat men too, that should work against the viagra "side effects" :)

you've got those backwards. systolic is the high number (when you heart pumps) and diastolic is the low number (when the heart is resting). there are a few ways to lower your blood pressure briefly, but for the most part it's either lifestyle changes, medication, or both. if you try to bear down like you're going to poop, it stimulates the vagal nerve and will drop you blood pressure a little for a short while (hint: dont actually poop in the doctors office. while not uncommon, it is generally frowned upon). thats why so many old people die on the pot; they go to take a duece, BP drops to low and they kill over.

electronic BP cuffs are not always particularly accurate, especially considering who know the last time it was calibrated. but with that said, 167/97 is what people in the medical community would call bad. you should probably get that checked, sooner rather than later. high BP can cause all kinds of problems, and that is definitely in a less than desirable zone. stroke/kindey failure(dialysys is no fun...)/cardiac issues/etc.

also something to note, the anxiety of the BP test itself can cause it to be falsely high. im around medical types on a regular basis, but i still get what many refer to as "white coat syndrome." i always have to have my BP taken twice cause the first time it is way elevated due to the anxiety of having a doctor mess with me(feels like im taking a test i didnt study for). a few minutes later i can relax a little and its normal.
