If you want to run 30 lbs of boost what octane fuel do you have to run?

116 octane!!! Now they even have 118..if you can find it.. I run VP-116 leaded race gas..

Just to clarify VP C16 is a leaded racing gasoline having a motor octane (M) of 117. M is more difficult to achieve that research octane (R). The test used to establish M is felt by some to be more representative of race conditions. You can read all about it on VP's site.

VP sells fuels having M up to 120.3, which is ("mathematically") as high as M goes. However, you must be certain that the fuel you use is intended for turbocharged applications. To be sure, octane is NOT the only characteristic of fuels that matters. Contact VP with your specific application for their recommendations.

BTW, all these fuels are leaded.

I do know that VP makes Import, M = 120.3, and it is for what I'll call ultimate turbocharged applications. This fuel is not readily available, but they'll make you some if you have the wallet. Last I knew it was north of $20/gallon, and I'm sure it's more now.

Your might find Import to be overkill, but if you have a boner for octane, be my guest. Practically speaking C16 will likely be fine - to my understanding it's been run sucessfully are very high boost levels, much higher to 30 PSI.

Thanks for dropping the knowledge BRO.. I just know that a friend has run C-16 until his gauge pegged beyond 35lbs with no knock. So for me not goign past 30 lbs its what I will consider safe.. I can get a drum for $435.00 an from what I hear thats a pretty good deal.. again thanks for the info.. I am sure 120 is not cheap @ all.. I read on Vp's site that 116 is ideal for Turbocharged applications by the way..

93+meth for me. No knock here at 30psi.

Are any of you guys running that high of boost with an unopened motor or I guess I mean on the original head gaskets? Yeah a station right buy my house sells 100 octane but it's only 95 motor octane so it seems like it's a waste at $4.67 a gallon

Is it the Sunoco GT-100? The 93 pump gas has a lower motor octane. R+M/2 is still a good way to compare fuel and the 100 unleaded I use works very good - smells good too!

The reason this question is hard to answer, is that are more things involved than just "boost". Cam, compression, injectors, intercooler, engine cooling, etc. 30 pounds with a high manifold temp doesn't get as much air into the engine as 30 pounds with a lower temp, so it's hard to make a statement about what will or won't work, without specifying all sorts of stuff.

I was just asking in general meaning that if you built a motor to run very high boost what fuel would you use. I understand you can't just crank up the boost, and that there are many things that factor into a correct answer. The replies I did get answered my question exactly. Thanks guys. I love this web site

Yes it is the sunoco gt100. When I use it I seem to get a lot of knock at like 17-18 psi. What do you run your boost at with it?
