It's not so much the turbo you have to worry about. It's how much boost will the engine tolerate with the grade of octane you have available.

Generally 15# is about the safest maximum you can use with 91 or so octane.

93 octane, and you can push it up to about 17, and so on, and so on.

You have to stay away from detonation, so as not to bust a head gasket, and the way to do that is not to exceed the boost level that the octane can support.

BTW, the stock boost level for 86 GN's was 12#.

Before you go turning up the boost, you need to have a good handle on a couple of things. Detonation will kill your motor. For every combination, the point at which you get detonation and knock retard is a little different. First, get a scan tool. This will allow you to tune your motor and tell whether you are getting any knock retard, what your 02 readings are etc. You also should get a fuel pressure gauge and adjustable fuel pressure regulator to help you tune your combination. Your fuel pump may become an issue if it is stock as it may not be able to provide the volume you need to handle that "extra" boost. General opinion of some very knowledgable board members is that the stock turbo is good for up to 23 psi. After that, it adds too much heat to the air charge to be effective. Hope this helps.
