What does everyone think of these? I've heard good and bad things...

Having had one since they hit the market I would not drive the car with out one!! This coupled with a Scanmaster are invaluable tools. Headgaskets are not fun to replace.

Does it go off to correspond with knock on the Scanmaster?

non audible gauge only type is useless.
Unless you like little lights that go off for no apparant reason.

Spend your money a Scanmaster

The scanmaster gives accurate knock numbers and retard values. I found the gauge to be fairly accurate, it can get falsed i.e. wheel hop or such, but so would the ECM. I had an audiable knock detector originally but never liked the freakin beeping.

ScanMaster is the best if you train yourself to watch it all the time, but in the heat of running someone either at the track or on the street or giving one of your friends a "ride" you may forget to look at it, then bang!
That's when the audible and visible knock detectors help to stop you from staying in it tooo long and hopefully prevent major damage but depending on how much boost your running and the condition of the motor it may be too late.
They are in all my cars and for the $120.00 or so its cheap insurance when my brain isn't working.
Your car should be tuned for 0 knock but sh i tt happens
