i found an 83 gn. the intake manifold is cracked bad. i want fuel injection and in the 10's. i have an 87 ecu and wiring harness. i'm going to build in intake manifold for it. i work in a custom turbo shop so my resource are close to infinte. my question, is there diferent sensors for the 83 to the 87 ecu and what is different for the motor them selves. i beleive the block and heads are different for the IC gn. the turbo placement is going to be change and it will have a front mount IC. i'm also removing the fan shoud and fan for an electric fan ( i'll need the space). Also i'm going to use an LT1 mass air and translate it. any help would be useful.

thanks

if you are building a race car, why fool around with the stock computer....get an aftermarket system (FAST, et al)...it'll prolly turn out to be cheaper and very flexible with tuning options (you don't need a MAF either...)

why make custom stuff when the stock '86-'87 intercooled parts work. The '83 block casting is poor and I wouldn't trust it into the 10's.

Using all '86-87 intercooled parts like ported stock iron "8445" casting heads, ported lower intake, bigger cam, TE-63 or larger turbo, FMIC intercooler, 50lb injectors injectors (or larger), stock ported headers, 3" downpipe good gas and good chip will put you in the 10's with traction.

Making a manifold and custom headers will be not only huge project but may not be better than the stock parts that are a bolt on and proven into the 9's.

Buy a complete '87 engine/trans and change your car into the intercooled '86-87 setup. Total bolt in. The rear end is different also for the '86-87 car. 8.5" ring gear 10bolt rear. Can handle 700hp+ when built up with good axles etc. Stick with the 3:42 gears as it has been proven going to 3:73 or 3:90's doesn't do anything but slow you down.

well, it occured to me, but you would be wrong (please see "before black" section). There is an 83 GN. Dude, get rid of your motor, and buy a 86-87 engine.

You dont read very well then. There was an 82 GN but no 83 GN's.
All the turbo Regals in 83 were T Types.
Basically, starting with an 83 would be like starting with any other regular Regal. Expensive and extensive swap since you would be replacing the whole drive train.
If you have the 83 engine then save the crank, rods and heads (if it has 8445's). The trans crossmember would also be the same since the 83's had a 2004r, but it isnt the correct calibration.

as for the the term "gn" for an 83. i'm wrong it is a t-type.

i'm building custom headers because the turbo is being relocated. the custom intake manifold is needed cuz i don't think the IC cars' intake will be suitable and i'm changing the thottle body. i found an 87 block to be built over the winter. for now i want to see how the the new intake, IC system and headers are going to work on the 83' motor. if i blow it up, well, i kinda plan on that. as for the MAF, its getting an adjustable MAF (for those that don't know, yes, there are adjustable MAF).

question. what is the biggest injector size be for the computer needs to be altered?

why build all this custom stuff that is very time consuming, you ask? i did say i work at a custom turbo shop. i do this every day. also it give me a good chance to try some silly ideas i have.

WHY mess around with all the hastle of converting from a carb. ['83] setup to that of fuel injection ['84-'87]:  ? IMO you would better off buying a used fuel injected engine. Remember you will also have to change fuel system to to support the fuel pressure needed for fuel injection. To my knowledge you can NOT switch from '83 ecm to '87. there are an abundance of difference in sensors between carburated engines and sequential fuel injection. Just my thoughts
