My car keeps burning up the voltage regulator in the alternator. I've been running Red's volt booster, and I thought that was my problem. I eliminated it, and its still doing the same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

I had two different thoughts when I read your post:

The first was that you had used a non insulated bolt on the regulator where an insulated bolt needed to be. Quote from link below: Note: The bolt that goes through the brushes is NOT insulated. The one on the other side IS. Be careful, switching these bolts around WILL blow the regulator IMMEDIATELY!

The second was that you had bad diodes (one way electrical switches). In either case, check out this link:

update..........

Thanks for your input turbo Brian. Here's an update. I checked the voltage at the battery with the car idling. It reads 14.4 volts. The alternator whines really bad. I'm not sure if that's too high or what, so I took another alternator off of another car to see if the problem persists. It runs fine for a while, then with no warning, it starts to hesitate and stall. This only seems to happen on the highway. I'm sure its something stupid that I'm just not smart enough to figure out. I'm just running out of patience.

The alternator that I did have on it was the original one rebuilt by an alternator shop.
