I have a motor thats been sitting on an engine stand for a looong time. I was wondering if a compression test be accurately done with the motor on the stand still?

Also, I will be dropping the pan to see the condition of the bearings, etc. What tool/technique would I use to check for any crankwalk, and any other things I should inspect while the oil pan is off?

compression check should be done with the engine warm but it is still possible to hook up the starter and do the test. It will still provide usefull information such as variance between cylinders and low cylinders.

A magnetic base dial indicator is the best way to check crank end play but you may be able to measure it using feeler gap gauges, then move the crank, then measure it again - calculate the difference.
