Kind of a cross between the two (great just what we need more confusion  )

Anyway, what do you think the animators were using for inspiration?

I was staring at the poster in the movie theatre and thinking the same thing. I say since it is the number 86 than they were looking at NASCAR pictures from the 80's for inspiration. I'll have to look through the archives and see if there were any green cars running the number 86. The only green car that comes to mind is the City Chevrolet Lumina used in the movie "Days of Thunder" but that was car #46. Also some numbers stand out better than others along with certain colors. They were probally trying to avoid creating an optical illussion, if that is even possible. There is another "race" car in that poster that looks a lot like Richard Pettys old #43 STP car.

Looks like a Monte to me. You think Disney would think of a Buick? ;) I wish.

Jaosn

That picture is from a bad angle. The car has the power bulge hood....it's a turbo Buick! The grill is too tall to be a Monte....it's a Buick.

Yup dgreen1069, I was going to add that there is a hood bulge, you can clearly see it on the diecast car.

This movie is a marketing jackpot, there is a Jeep, a Petty like Daytona, a VW bus, Porsche etc. etc.

Wonder what the Monte guys are saying...I think it looks like a TR too. My wife just purchased a sticker book for my son, I was shocked when I saw the '86 car...I thought "Wow Disney used a Regal...Cool" Remember Buicks were running strong in the mid to late 80's.

Monte

Looks like a Monte with a regal grille. I have theory why it is number 86....

In 1986, the Monte Carlo SS aerocoupe was introduced and Chevy made only 200 cars to be sold to the public. Reason being, the body design could not be eligible in Nascar competition if Chevy had not made the bare minimum of 200 units.
------>So in theory(gonna get flamed for this), the 86 SS aerocoupe is rarer than the GNX (not saying I believe it's worth more or like it more than the Buick, but they are very uncommon.)

my .02 cents

The rear looks Monte like and the front looks like a Turbo Regal. It just seems to have the Monte Carlo line, if you know what I'm talking about, more than a Regal line. It says more Monte then Regal to me. I wish it was a TR. :frown:

Could be based on the Buick that was basically responsible for the advent of the street GN:

Darrell Waltrip drove his Mountain Dew-sponsored Buick to 12 wins, 21 Top-5 finishes and the Winston Cup championship in 1981. Waltrip repeated as champion in 1982. Good ol' DW! Bobby Allison won the 1983 championship in a Buick also.

Not sure if you heard but the #43 character's name is Strip Weathers and is voiced by Richard Petty himself. A number of real life racers apparently make cameo voice appearances in the movie...

its a cartoon meaning they coulda mixed a monte, regal, datsun, with a hint of a ducati motorcycle :)

looks like a regal monte hybrid- definatly has the powerbulge on it though

I just got back from a sneak Preview with my 7 year old. This movie was great.

4 thumbs Way up.

To me it is more regal than monte - montys have curved "character lines" over the wheels - they have since the mid 70's, had them in the 80's and the new ones have them too.

Regals dont have the same character lines - one reason we can't use monte doors on regals...

What do the taillights look like - big difference there

I feel like a retard for even posting in this thread, but its a monte carlo based drawing. The grill isn't supposed to "resemble" any particular car, rather its given its shape to give the car character.

So thats it.

And every single one of you needs to get laid. Seriously.

I'm not kidding.

Do it.

Now.
