Let's bring this up here to this forum, this one gets more traffic, must not be a mod on the other
This is in response to all the "Do a search" responses everyone likes to give. May be why some have post counts in the 1000's. ;)
Anyway, as the responses say the search function is terrible for a lot of us. Is it something simple we are missing because this seeems to be common with a lot of us?
Thanks for the help.
PS,please try not to move this thread as it is a TECH issue, seeing as how most questions asked are of tech nature, especially when told to do a search.

True: seems any more than one word entered in the "search" box, and the system can't handle it  .

I've noticed that the more I ask for the less I get. Most times I get a "page not found" 404 error. Honestly, when I need to search I usually go to one of the other TR boards.

I think it mostly has to do with the setup. I run Vbulletin at work and do not have this issue. Most of all the forums that people now use use Vbulletin including turbobuick and t6p.

Most people opt for the cheaper version which does not include support or setup. I am not sure if this is the case but it could be. Most of the time, these sites are setup and they learn on the fly. They really don't have anyone to bounce ideas back and forth.

If anyone would like to know more, please visit http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/

I love this site and I'm not knocking it. There are issue with everything in life. We do our best to work through them.

To the moderators and or site owner: Thanks for doing a good job.

there should be a serch for each section. not the hole web  site.

There is. If you do an 'advanced' search you can search by keyword, user name and within specific forums.

Jim

When someone says to do a search they are taking into account that the search will be working although it seems that half the time it doesn't. But the reason you get " Do a search " is because your topic has been covered over and over and over and over and over :D

First I don't mean to be knocking anyone here just want to be clear on that. I am sarcastic by default (family of smart a****).
As far as the "do a search" responses, it's not just me I notice it all the time even when you do a search, sometimes that is the only thing you get in some of the posts. I know it may have been brought up a million times but sometimes with everyone that knows so much on here and have been through some of the issues so many times a simple answer may be easy. For example if someone asked what was the correct torque procedure for the intake manifold I have done it a few times now and could tell you the correct order, 32 lbs and to retorque later.

Anyway, let's get this fixed.
And thanks justabuickv6 for the input. You brought up some info I didn't know about.

I understand what you're saying, but here's the thing. There are certain topics that come up all the time and have just been discussed in length and the next week someone will post the same question. There's no need to re-type everything again and again when you can search it. I am a very experienced guy and have played with these cars for over 8 years and I always search every topic I need info on ( unless I just don't see what I'm looking for ) before I post about it.

But all that being said, with the search feature so hit and miss these days, post away and if somebody tells you to search maybe they will try to post up a link for you if they can get it to work :)

my .02

I do a search on here just about everytime i log on, and it almost always works for me. I've fixed (or) learned a ton of things on both my gn's by using the search. On the occaision that I don't find the answer that I'm looking for, or just flat out overlook what I needed  , then I'll post. And if its something that may have been posted only a week ago, and I overlooked it, I certainly wouldn't expect for somebody to go typing it again. A simple reply with a link to that post is very much appreciated. Perhaps some sort of bold type reminder (or something along those lines) at the top of each tech forums to do a search before posting? When people start getting sarcastic because someones posted a recent already question, that can certainly be a put off. I'm certainly not complaining about anything though. This website is rocks!

idea

It would be cool if admins could declare a "best question w/ answer" which would be paired with the original question and stick it in a special read only forum that was searchable. This way the good data would be in one spot and searches wouldn't include every thread on the forums that had a keyword in it.

Usually when I search and search I have to scroll through pages and pages of stuff to find the best thread. Even then you have to read a thread for a while to figure out what is going on. For example, search on 'THDP' You'll find threads of all kinds, from for sale to feedback to any other tech issues. It takes time to scroll through all this stuff to find what you are looking for about a single word- THDP.

I still have a tough time drilling down to what I'm looking for with the "advanced" search. Very frustrating when I know there was a thread that had info in that I'ld like to read again.

I have usually had very good results with the search feature.

I almost always limit the search, using the advanced search, to titles only.

Also, I rarely reply with do a search, but when one asks what type of cam is good for my combo...

BTT
Have been trying to do a search today but no luck. Won't even search on one word, fuggedabout two words. :frown:

I've never had a problem with the search function, except for times like now when it actually doesn't work at all.

It's just a matter of learning to use it. Just like any other internet search engine, the more words you type in, the fewer results you're going to get. You can't type in a 7 word sentence and expect it to pop up. You have to search for a general topic, and yes, you're going to get multiple pages of returns that way, and then you have to search each thread for what you want.

Part of the time, I think people are rude with the "go search for it" comments, but I believe there are some topics that do come up way too often (RJC power plates, exhaust systems, etc).

Every time I try to search for more than 2 words I alwyas get page connot be found  .I just go to other boards to search

me too

I tried to search fuel tank, fuel sending unit, anything related to that today & it didnt work.
