We have a dyno challenge going on this weekend, and I have a new combo and need some ideas. I have a ta-49 turbo, stock intercooler (dutt. neck), Red Armstrong 108 chip, 110 octane gas, champion heads, and intake. I have tuned up to 18lbs of boost safely. How much boost can I run safely, what should I set my fuel pressure be, should I lock up the torque convertor on the dyno, what gear should I dyno in, any other ideas or tips would be appreciated. I am running against some stiff competition in some big block chevelles, supercharged mustangs, etc. Thanks again.

John, I hate to tell someone what boost they can run as combination, conditions, etc. all affect the situation.

I would think that you should be able to move up around the mid 20s...but, I would advise you to make some third gear runs if you can find a place to do it and work up on the boost until you find the timing retard point, then back down a pound for safety.

I would like to think the car will be effectively fatter on the dyno than on the street which may give you a bit more margin.

Like steve said, work the boost up one pound at a time, testing it in third gear on the street. You should be able to run close to 25 lbs of boost with racegas. Hopefully you have some sort of scan tool. If not, don't even bother going to the dyno. A scan tool is a must have. FP should be set at around 42-44 line off. The test will be done in 3rd gear. Get there early and watch the other guys run. If you want, the dyno shop guys will run the car for you. Don't be afraid to ask them questions.

I would think that you would want to lock up the converter because anything that puts more power to the wheels is going to show up on the dyno. I know in my experience when the converter locks you can feel the car go faster even though the rpm's go down, which is a wierd but cool sensation. :D

Thanks guys, what kind of number should I be looking for. I do have the new turbolink and I will hook it up and use it to test tonight. Thank again.

Just guessing, A 49 should make low-mid 400's at the wheels. Get out the turbo link and get on the road and turn up the boost and get the fuel adjusted. Shoot for 25#'s of boost. C16 is a must if you want the best performance. Red's chips are usually rich so you need more boost. How much you need is determined by how much timing you have and how much fuel is in the chip.

Lock the converter. It'll make more hp at the wheels.

Here's the only way we could could get mine to make a good 3rd gear pull on a dynojet. From idle, go through the gears until you get to 3rd. Holding it in third, start rolling into the throttle slowly. We reached full throttle at 4000 rpm. Anything sooner and it would downshift to second. You may try rolling into it and reaching full throttle by 3500 and see how it does. We backed off of the T.V cable a bit to try and help also. You can't just mat it or it will downshift. Roll into it.

Turn the boost up...

..i would have c-16 in the tank, and turn the boost way up!:D Have the converter locked, and roll into it till about 55-60 mph, and then mat it, it should not down shift, if it does move up the speed a little bit. Or let it downshift and watch the jaws drop, you will get some crazy torque #'s from the down shift and up shift, which can be cool for crowd pleasing.;) Also keep in mind you will be richer on the dyno then in actual driving conditions. If you are perfectly tuned on the dyno, you will be lean on the street or vise/visa. Those RA108's have a lot of timing, so watch for knock.

Good luck, and post your results.

Hey it was a great day at the dyno shoot out. I want to thank everybody for their help on my tuning needs. The good news is I won the street legal horsepower portion, the bad news is I won it with my mustang. The buick put down 365 horses and 470 lbs of torque. The torque was second only to a cummings turbo diesel, with a full exhaust and chip. It made 500 lbs of torque. I did need better gas, as the combo leaned out on the top end. I found out my RA 108 chip did not work at all. I got to five pounds of boost, and it just quit. Luckily I had one of Harry's race chips as well, and while it wanted to die at idle it worked really well. Thanks again for everything and I will continue to tune until I can correct the lean condition up top.

Thats great numbers

I ran on the dyno a couple of weeks ago and pulled 475 rwhp and an astounding 576 torque. I ran it with a me chip, 60-1, weber heads and 40lb injectors. My a/f ratio was in the 12-13 range.
