I was just wondering how many folks contemplated joining one of our Military branches? Or, have already done so due to the security of the job. Steady pay check, great medical benifiets for you and the family, 30 day's paid leave a year, multiple days off for the holiday's, etc. I know it's not for everyone, but, it's an option for those wanting very good security with the recent economy woes….

Please don't turn this into a political BS bashing thred and no, I'm not a recruiter!!! :p

when i originally went in, it was because i could not find a decent job. no regrets , thou i did miss some holidays and my sons graduations. Departures were always the worst.:frown: and homecomings were like holidays :)

I'd join in a minute if they decide to let in 50 year old dudes into the Top Gun training class.

I'm with you Eric, i'd go back but the permanent retiremnt as a disabled vet wont let me.

Being Deaf in my right ear, pretty much excludes me from any type of public service job:frown: :frown: Lost it at 15, would've joined at after grad. if that hadn't happened.

I found out 1 year after I turned 43 that they raised the enlistment age to 42
and I missed my chance to re-up. Would I do it again at 45? H*LL YES!! I miss my MP Corp.

I joined almost 11 years ago. Had thoughts of getting out at 4, then at 8, now will most likely stay in and retire. 9 more years to go before I can think about that. Especially when I have a family to support. But yes at a time like this right now I'm ever so thankful I'm in.

I am already. Not a chance that i am leaving...all the deployments are still better then not being able to provide for my family.

My son in law is in. He is going back to Afghanistan in Jan 2010. This is his 3 tour, he was in Afghanistan once before and Bosnia before that.

I personally dont think i would go into the service just bc i cant get a job, let alone im 23. people who have to support there families is understandable. but for me id would feel like im giving up by going to the military. I am what so ever not knocking the military, bc them guys let me wake up everyday, and live my life and i thank them all for that. If i was going to attend the service, it wouldnt be bc of me not finding a career. I am now enrolled into nursing school, and i hope that i can get threw it, while working a full time job, so i dont have to worry about getting layed off...

I have 1 month left. 7.5 yrs Navy.
Getting out dont like the new boss.
I have principals.

Giving up would be just that...giving up. By joining you open a world of opportunities. No it's not for everyone, and no it's not all peaches and cream but it's nice to know you pretty much have a guaranteed paycheck every few weeks, not having to "worry" about the day the lay you off (unless you're just a bad seed). Plus don't forget all the benefits and the early retirement, health care, dental care...the downside is all the politics and b.s. you deal with, which is going to be anywhere you go but in different forms. But I think in todays day and age with the recession it's about the best thing anyone can do. My 2 cents.

After 25 years in the Air Force, I am calling it quits and retiring. It's been one fun ride!

18 in, I'd like to stay 6 more, my only regret was that I got out for a few years to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. Didn't like it and went back in the military. If I would have never got out I'd be eligible to retire in 2 years

That part about the military not being for everyone is so dam true, I saw plenty of E.L.S.' and lots of L.O.S., it's not for everyone.

Did my 20

What I miss is the great people I had to work with.
Deployments and time away sucked.

The benefits are impossible to match, anywhere.
