Hi, I finally purchased my first TR a few weeks ago. It's an 86 T-top GN. The only supposed mods are chip, gutted cat, K&N filter, hotwired fuel pump and adjustable boost regulator.
I've only driven it a couple times... test drive and home. It seems to idle pretty high and a little rough. The EGR coil was just replaced. I am concerned about emissions. Should my car pass inspection with a gutted cat? Should I put in a stock chip? What other tricks should I try for inspection? Any and all recommendations welcome. TIA

Paul,
I just got my GN last friday, and took it in for inspection and emissions today, and it failed emissions bad. I also have a gutted cat(I figured I would give it a try). So I don't know what I am going to donow:confused:

I passed mine a few weeks ago without a cat, I used the stock chip and lowered the fuel pressure to 35lbs. I also had the throttle body off for the power plate install and found the EGR passage was completely blocked with carbon. I think a good spring cleaning will probably get you through.

Put the stock chip in, make sure its nice and hot, and pour a bottle of G2P in the tank before you go. You can get G2P at pep boys.

I passed the Virginia emissions test, 15 & 25mph runs on the rollers, with a blocked EGR. Got the GN warmed up by cruising for 1/2 hour on the highway and let it idle in the parking area while waiting to be put on the rollers. Prep:
93 octane
working cat
working O2 sensor
lowered fuel pressure (approx 41)
GM top engine cleaner
new oil & filter
:)

OK... so I gotta get a new cat... can I pick one up at Advance Auto Parts? Where can I get a high flow cat? I also need a stock chip, since the previous owner lost it. Anyone have one for sale? What exactly is G2P?

G2P - Guaranteed 2 Pass -emissions. You get your money back if you don't. It says to run it through before going to the test, but you actually want it in the tank while doing the test. I'm pretty sure its mainly alcohol. Another trick is to run the AC while doing the test.

If you're going to get a cat, get a cheapo and then take it back off when your done with the test.

I passed here in Arizona yesterday. I even had my Max Effort chip in and the power plate with no EGR hole drilled! All I did was throw on the CAT and run a bottle of Guaranteed to pass through it. I was a bit surprised!

I assume Virginia uses ASM in combination with an idle test. You'll probably need the cat installed. Should be a three-way type cat (controls NOx, CO and HC). Also, if you're using an open loop (at idle) chip, you'll have problems with the idle test. I passed the CA test, but an idle test is not part of the enhanced area test.

I have an emissions chip for stockers I can sell you. I no longer have stock injectors. Let me know, send me an e-mail oviedo@nortelnetworks.com

I'll let it go $18 shipped.
