Hey guys. Just finished porting/polishing heads today. Carefully smoothed out chambers (tried to not take much material out here). Opened up/shaped intake and exhaust bowls enough to smooth and get rid of ridges and imperfections. Reshaped guides; smoothed and tapered a bit on the exhausts, and smoothed and shaped the intakes in a kind of "V" shape (didnt want to grind down guides as this is primarily a street car). Port matched intake and exhaust ports to gaskets. Took enough material from inside of ports to smooth out ridges, imperfections, and unwanted casting nonsense/slag; and to square up and match openings. All smoothing and reshaping was done with the thought of promoting air flow.
These are the first heads that I went to this extent on. I was planning on bringing them by the machine shop I used to work at and let the head machinest check the basics for me (seats, guides, valves, springs, and to see if they need any resurfacing).
My question is: should I be worrying about bringing them somewhere to get them flowed first?
Thanks, Justin.

P.S. also, while Im at it, what valve guides should I go with, if needed? Bronze?

If you didn't do a 3 angle valve job on the heads, before porting them, its a good idea to have one done. You will probably be surprised how much more material this removes. Then you can just carefully blend in the machined surfaces into your existing port work. Worth the money in terms of extra flow.

Locally the price for a 3 angle valve job is around $150/200 for the pair, including skim milling the head gasket surface to dead flat and backcutting the stock valves. New valve guides if required would be slightly more.

On the intake side of the ports, make sure you smooth the "pushrod pinch" transition inside the port, changing it from a sharp transition to a sweeping radius. You may have done this but it wasn't really mentioned.

Had to think about that one, then look at the heads, then .......... doh! Yeah I did it, just couldnt picture what you were talking about, breathed in too many metal particles while I was doing them (must be some lead in there somewhere:rolleyes: ).
They didnt have many miles on the previous valve job. I guess I'll just go with my first plan and bring them to the machine shop to check everything out. Whatever they need, they will get.
Thanks.
