What kind of amps does a fuel pump pull? I want to rig my DIY alky with a potentiometer to regulate pump speed. I need to know how many watts, amps and resistance to work for.

Thanks, Scott

How much wattage should the pot be rated? Any idea what range of resistance would be needed?

Thanks Steve.

Probably more TurboDave's field.....I would estimate 250 watts would be enuf.

Resistance? 1-15 ohms? Sounds too simple to me. :)

watts equal volts x amps
Resistance equal volts/amps

Better get some professional advice....I am sure I am missing something.

Current draw increases with pressure.

Thumbs up for Steve. 250 watts would be good. If you went a little higher ohms on the pot would give you a little finer control.:)

Where can i get a pot that rating? Our local component shop didnt have anything close to that amperage with low ohms, much less the watt handling capability. Does anyone have a source for this?

Thanks,
Scott

Laughing, everytime I looked at that kid...I thought he looked like a pot head....he was not too bright.

Laying in bed last nite, I was thinking of your idea....

I was calculating using a fixed 15 volts...but pump draw depends upon pressure.. more pressure, the current draw goes up. BTW, long time ago Dan G posted some data on the mailing list tech section showing flow, current draw, pressure, etc for some pumps...a Waldro 307 was what I was using. A 340 pulls a little less as I recall.

Anyway, as the boost kicks the pressure up, the amps change...depending upon the voltage you want to use, the resistance will change in the equation.

I suspect to be stable and repeatable, a solid state regulator may be required. KB sells a Dial A Pump or something similar. For some reason, I would like to say Jay Carter had something to do with that product but I might be smoking the good stuff too. :)

Even if this is just for an alky system? This will be a simple on/off pump, no pressure related fuel system. So it wont be affected by boost.

If you aren't pushing against a regulator and it's just dead headed, the pump won't draw as much current. The thing though, is that even with less current draw you're talking about a -nasty- big potentiometer. Have fun frying a few in testing :P

You could basically duplicate the stock fuel system for your alcohol system. FPR, tank, supply and return lines, pump, etc. To tune you'd just crank up or down on the FPR.
