While under my car I noticed 4 of my nuts holding the pan were missing. Upon closer inspection I noticed the studs going through the girdle into the block would wiggle side to side. I remember hearing about these studs breaking from overtorque so I thought I may possibly have the same problem. Thinking this, I pulled down on all of the studs that were missing nuts but they would not pull out (as if broken off ). Also noticed a couple other nuts were only finger tight. I don't feel the studs should have any wiggle to them even if the pan nuts have come off since they have another nut holding the girdle to the block (via said stud). I have not yet removed any of the loose studs because I wanted a little feedback from you guys first. Anyone care to comment?

theres a nut between the pan and girdle so its not going to pull out

I had 1 break also

I had my clearence corret all the way around the block to girdle which isnot easy to do..

I torqued it down one night and didnt have the pan on it and when I got back to it the next day one of the studs was gone..

I looked and it was broke off in the block

either way I put it together without one
I havent checked to see if any more have broke since then.

I think its going to need stronger studs or tighter clearence between the girdle and block so there's not as much load on them

It sounds to me like you got some broke ones

yep....

they're broke. I just tried screwing them out and they only spun without backing out. Guess I'll pull the pan. Can I simply replace the broken studs, retorque all the stud bolts and slip the pan back on, or is that too simple?

yea you can just replace them and put back together ...no problem there ..BUT....

there may be problem getting the broke part out the block ;)

5/16 - 18 X 2.25" studs

are these a special order item or can I pick them up at most fastener supply shops? Are they grade 8 or better? ???

if not grade 8 or better they need to be

Im in city so wouldnt be hard to find but dont know about where you live

Hey Craig,
You may wanna call D. Steele on this. Daniel was aware that this was happening with girdled blocks. He may be able to help ya... He has told me once but I did not pay attention to the details.

warm engine first?

I called Jason Cramer and he is sending a set of studs this week.
I'm going to tackle the project this weekend. I'm thinking of letting the engine warm up before I do it, it may help the broken studs back out a little easier. ??? I can only hope!
Any suggestions before I tackle this thing would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone know if the oil pan will come out with a girdle attached to the block?

I pulled the pan on mine w/ a girdle, but had to jack up the motor first. Not hard to do, just pull the motor mount bolts and lift! Came out FAIRLY easy after that.

I guess I'll have to call Jason since I'am having the same problem.
