My buddy is selling all his stuff, and I have a chance to buy his ATR headers today, with matching down pipe. Its a pretty good deal. I did a search, and have heard a lot of problems with ATR headers, and some good comments too. My car should be capable of my goals now (10.9x et), but what gains would I see with these headers, and are they worth it? Cost is not an issue. I have a nice set of Dwight Hayden ported and welded stockers now.

I noticed a lot of people commented that they are not any help until you're running 10's, so is that to say they won't help at all at slower levels, or are they just not worth it? For example, If I'm running 11.20's now, would I see a gain with them?

You would be lucky to gain .1 even, i went slower due to increase spool up time. Presently i am going 133.5 mph on stock unported headers.

headers

nobs, did the headers slow you down? did you go back to stock headers. many thanks ed

my car picked up with the ATR headers........from 10.8's to 10.7 and almost 3 mph....no downside to them except those damn crossover gaskets

I noticed no difference in spooling time with the 45A

I think i lost .1 and no mph gain, it just could be at the time i had less stall in the car, so they were not helping spool up at all

I didn't really pick up anything with em. Middle 10s before and after. My stockers were so fatigued after 17 years, it made sense. I'll tell you this, It gives the car a completely different sound at WOT.

I don't care about sound (much), just performance and durability. Do these things require a lot of maintenance? Like do they go through gaskets a lot? I have enough crap to work on as it is.

The bolts have a tendency to loosen off, i was tightening them quite often, the cross over pipe if not welded in the middle will leak, and the cross over hits against the passenger control arm., and you have to smash the pipe to make clearance. also the cross over wont fit with the girdle without extending it

hey norbs, ill email you back tomm about that crank pulley

anyways, is your friend still selling the headers? are they the newer style heads, im very interested. Thanks

I would buy them if you can get a good deal on them. Then you wouldn't have to worry about upgrading down the road. If they don't meet your expectations, you could always sell them.

I'd get them, they won't hurt a car with your performance level. I like mine, i use the copper RTV on all my gaskets, and usually it gets on the bolts a little and seems to keep them nice and tight. I used to have a problem with a leaky crossover pipe and blowing the crossover flange gaskets, but i went to O'Reilly auto, and bought some very tough gaskets that i think come from some kind of jeep. I have to trim them a little bit, but combined with the copper RTV, i haven't had a leak in a few years. The two piece crossover I had welded.

headers

86brick, what gasket are they talking about? one for the header to the head??(i use red atv) is there a gasket for the pipe to fit together?? thanks ed

The gasket between the header and head as far as I know and there is a gasket for the cross over flange as JDS mentioned....

atr headers

did you guys use the gasket from the header to the head? or just seal it with atv? thanks

I use the fel pro 1400s(i think thats the number) coated in copper rtv. Haven't blown one ina few years as well, i actually have reused them more than a few times:cool:

No problems with mine. I wouldn't have bought them for any gains but my stock header was cracked(again) and I got a good deal on them. Clearance is tight, but everything fits. I think the kicker is that they limit your choices on downpipes. I went ahead and got ATR's DP also.

I use Fel-Pro 1400's at the head and the graprite seals at the crossover clamps.

I noticed a little better spool up but that is because my stock headers were junk

I have had pretty good luck with my set.
I had them on a stock car and TSM Car.
Once my car had a built motor it always had a 4000 rpm
converter, so I never had spooling issues.
