As some of you might remember my motor spun a bearing. I am going to have the block and heads tanked. Can I get away with just doing that for the rebuild? I plan on going with the edelbrock cam. Would it be ok to reuse the stock pistons? The motor is going to be stock aside from the edelbrock cam and some bolt ons. ANY ADVISE Would Be GREAAT! Going to start soon.

depends on what you want from the motor/car?
what are your future plans with it?

a good built engine should not be skimped on. if you want it to last.
take it to a reputable shop that is familar with the turbo motors.
do a search and decide and talk to your machinist as far as your goals and what is required to machine the block.
also what you can do to make it last and address some of the inherent issues with this engine. (lifter bores not centered, oiling mods,ect..)

i spent 1k on just the machine work for my block but i did some other stuff than just a stock rebuild.

i am sured you will get alot of different opinions.

good luck

how much use do the stock pistons have? Ive seen aftermarket pistons on ebay sell pretty cheap just have to keep your eyes on them

Hi,
As long as you are into the motor, wouldn't it be a good idea to have it honed? Why do it yourself, when a pro can do it better? As far as pistons are concerned, stockers are pretty tough, forged is better. My machinist doesn't like hypereutectic pistons, finds them hard to fit properly.Maybe he's a hack, but his stuff has been holding up for me, anyway.....
As far as heads are concerned, do a cleanup cut, properly surfaced to a good finish, and then ports match 'em. Go in about 1 inch, nice and smooth. Then have the valves and guides done. Oh, and match the intake to the heads, again, nice and smooth. Good luck with your rebuild!

the details

I kind of did plan on having it plate honed. I do have a friend that used to build the n/a v6 and the turbo v6 in the 80s when he owned his auto parts store and machine shop. From what I hear it was very respected. He said I should have it plate honed and replace the cam too beings I spun a bearing. I've been getting mixed thought with members telling me to use the stock cam. I figure i'm going in why not put something better in it? Anyways I thought I read somewhere that port matching the intake and heads could hurt performance. But I could have read wrong. I MIGHT go ahead and smooth them just because it's easy and I can't mess that up. What inexpensive things can I do to help make this motor last besides change the oil (lol). I figured out why this one didn't last basically because of lack of maintinece and the guy just didn't care. Check back with you guys later.

Are you having the crank cut or getting new crank?
How about main studs? Billet main caps?

it starts to add up

just be careful that you dont go over. i recently had my motor rebuilt with .030 over forged piston, .010/.010 on the crank, of course new bearings through-out, billet center mains, main studs, arp rod bolts, poston cam, port n' polish on the heads, new slightly bigger valves, new gm lifters, arp head studs, poston headers, arp header studs (had to order longer ones for the tops), copper header gaskets. just that right there was just north of $3500 on the long block so watch out, it adds up quick. also i added billet thermo housing, 160* thermo, 38# injectors, ta-49, accufab adj fpr, underdrive crank and alt pulley, 3' single shot exhaust, that there was another $1200 or so. damn now that i think about it, ive spend alot of dough!

Don't worry

I've been planning this rebuild since I got the car. I have to watch every dime beings I only got 600 bucks to START with. Needless to say I hope my crank is salvageable. As far as making everything else better it's going to be limited to studs in the mains and arps in the rods. CONFUSED on the head bolts, some gnttype says they're reuseable but i've heard others say they are one time use. GNTTYPE says 86s were one time use and 87s were reuseable. GOT ME! Anyways that's about it except for the cam kit and springs I'm gonna get from frank G. MIght get a rjc power plate and hi flo front cover if I can find them for sale dirt cheap on the site....HINT HINT!
