just wondering

I was thinking about trying it on another bolck and torqe a set of heads down on it and see if it holds

Are you saying to use studs on some of the bolt holes and bolts on the other? I don't know, but then again, nobody has been able to explain to me the advantages of studs over bolts. I know they are stronger, but why? Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread Red. Hey that rhymes! Aren't you supposed to be going to the track soon to really put the screws to that car? I'm really interested to see those numbers!

I guess the question is ...is there enough material in the threaded boss area to redrilled and tapped?

Since you are just wondering, here is my opinion, don't think it will help as I think there is plenty of clamping force with bolts or studs. Problem is there is not enough strength in the stock heads or block to not deform under the very high cylinder pressures at high boost and/or detonation.

Slice a head through the combustion chamber and see how thin they are. We do know these a 20+ year-old design heads that went on "economy" 6 cylinders! Cars I work on with alum aftermarket heads have real good life with head gaskets as compared to stock iron heads that go even slower.

Off the subject, what brand are the wheels and what off-set do they have that are on your car to run the 12.5" slicks?

gm single steel shim gaskets...they are not the problem if it were any other gasket they would blow first time I lift the heads.

It may not help that its seeing 29# boost ...:D

my back rims are too narrow they are 8" weld superlites with 4.5 b/s im looking to go to 10" wheel with 5.5 bs

then tires are 28/12.50 et streets ...right now its sitting on 28/10.50/ drags on the same rims

I had the head studs at 100# but now they are more  try 125# and threads didnt come out the block :) dont try that at home ...lol

so looks like im running out of room to grow with these old iron heads ... then if I put good ones on it im gonna break something if I dont with these heads ...oh well just have to fix it .

its still a go so far heck well be heading out before long and I just finished changing the power steering pump on my truck ...dont things like that find the best times to die ?

I wont be sleeping .... by time im done getting everything together it'll be time to hit the road

guess if it makes it down the track I'll update when we get back on how it ran and what broke ..lol

That is the wheel size I am looking at also. Have you tried this size on your car? Want it to clear the outside fender lip with Hoosier 29/12-15 slicks on a notched frame.

Again, sorry for being off-topic with this question.:)

Cometic Head gaskets are strong enough to take whatever you throw at them. No trying to smoke your thread, just my opinion.

Is it possible to crush steel shims?

well after a 2.5 hour tow up there they called it off because of rain :(

good news is got back home and it was dry here so I took the car out for a ride and didnt hear no head lifting at all at 29# in lockup but never got to pull high gear.

halfway good news is we are set to get the track next friday

Nick: you talking a actual 12" slick ?

I'm thinking you'd need 6" b/s on a 10" wheel to get that off the 1/4 panel unless the lip is really rolled and the car dont squat and hit the wheel well were it starts rolling in as it goes up

and the 29" hieght may be a major problem at the front side of the wheel opening on the 1/4 panel also since my 28" tires will grow enough in high gear to rub.

what kinda trap speed you got to need a 29" tire ?

so far mine havent leaked anymore that i've heard

donno exactly how tight they are but lets just say very tight .:D

weathers looking alil better for this friday..got my fingers crossed for dry weather im ready for a timeslip ;)
