Just a heads up in the FWIW dept. My new $1600 Dell laptop Inspiron 8200 lasted exactly 1 day before the HDD took a dump. Since it failed on 3/12, I have been on the phone 4 times, [and also e-mail] to get it returned. It appears that the customer service is not aware of how the return system works. The e-mail was the only satisfactory way to get the answers.
Another buyer beware deal.. The quality was poor: The latch was hard to use, the hinges were VERY tight, the DVD would work only after you slammed it shut, and the unit immediately started shutting WINDOWS down due to "serious error detection".
So far, about the only high quality LT I see out there now is the new SONY VAIO line.. Supurb quality and features.. very liitle cost difference vs the Dell 8200.

My story, and I'm stickin to it!!;) ;)

PS: Joe, you were right!:D

I agree with the quality. I support about 10 Latitudes and I'm not too happy with the quality.

On the other hand, the 70 or so desktops seem to work like a champ and I LOVE their support. It's always a quick phone call, 10 minute diag and a new part is overnighted.

I suggest IBM for a quality laptop.

Sorry to hear

I've used Dell laptops almost exclusively for over 6 years. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Lemons do happen.

As a general price point, Dells are affordable and typically work very well. I'd simply return the laptop and request a replacement. That would likely do the trick.

...and I second scottyd's notion of IBM units being a quality laptop. They're the best I've ever used, but I can't quite justify the lofty pricetag every year when I buy a new one.

I use a Compaq Presario 900US and it's gorgeous.
Not a peep of trouble, and highly rated.
It's gotta be the best computer I've used to date.:)
It came loaded with Windows XP home edition too.

I am considering a lowend HP (ZE-4240). Anybody having problems with them?

Thanks,
Tom

Do not get the Sony Vaio. My brother has one that is constantly crashing. He was always blaming it on the websites. I have a Compaq Presario 2800 and I never have a problem with it.

The Sony Vaio is one of the best laptops out there. Dell usually has pretty decent quality but I have only dealt with their desktops.

I use a Sony Vaio daily (am on it right now) and have not had the first problem with it.(knock on wood)...

:)

Buy used, when your done with it toss it.
Drop it, no big deal.
Stolen out of the car, oh well.

Falling for the eye candy trap is expensive.

Besides it's good for the environment, and what's good for the environment is good for the chillins, LOL
