OK I'm looking at buying a 87 GN and would like people that have and mod them to see if this is a good deal or a great deal.
I've wanted a GN since I saw my first one in 84(I was 14), I have a wife and 3 kids, and the wife said I had to get rid of my 94 Formula Firebird because 1. you can't fit 3 car seats in the back, and 2. it was a 6-speed and she can't drive a stick. So After looking around I was set to get a 95 Impala SS, but it has the same LT1 my Formula had and I am tired of working on those.
So I was looking and saw a link to a nice GN, which got me thinking, so I searched the net to find back seat pictures of a GN, found it has 3 selt belts ask the wife she said OK, Sorry so long but I have wanted a GN baddly just never thought that I could talk her into it.

So anyway,

What do you think?

It sounds like an OK car, but what's the price? A good deal is only a good deal if it's priced right.

A couple things to be concerned about. It has a front mount with no mention of cooling upgrades. If you live in a warm climate, on't plan on running the A/C much. Ramchargers dual electric fan would be a minimum, I'd think.

Is the 3000 stall converter a lock up or non lockup?

Flomasters aren't the best choice in a performance muffler for a turbo regal. Dual 3" is better than dual 2.5", but 2.5" ultraflows would be better still.

When you say cooling upgrades what should I ask about?

Also what rearend is in these cars (GM 10 bolt?) and how do they hold up?

I'll ask about the converter.
He also said he has 2 chips for it a street fighter or something like that and a Red something, I'll get him to write it in his email so I'll have it when I was talking to him my kids where going crazy so it was hard to hear.

Here's the link to the pictures of it.

He's wanting $9.9K but he said he would come down some.
Also it is NOT a GNX but it has the badges on it, not my thing but if I buy it all the badges will come off anyway.

Thanks again.

How many miles on the car/motor? Any rust? check the bottom of the doors and inside the trunklid for signs.

the rear is an 8.5" 10 bolt and is pretty strong.

It's seems like a pretty good deal, especially if he's slightly negotiable on price.

The car has 105,000 miles and the engine and tranny have 10,000 miles since the rebuild.

There is some slight rust at the bottom of the drivers door, and bottom of both from wheel wells, doesn't look to bad from the pictures I've seen. I't in northern ohio so I know it will have some rust. I live in Alabama where snow is not something we get alot of, if any.

He says he has about $10,000 in the engine and other mods, and that it has around 425Hp and 500+Tq,

As I said I'm looking for good honest things I can ask him,
That way I don't get screwed.

Thanks to all you that are answering this newbies questions.
If I do get it, then I'll be on this board alot.
I'm not new to muscle cars or modding or going fast, just new to the TR scene.

Will this be your only/ daily driver or do you have another car??? Also, how fast do you want this car to be? Looking at the mods and such, you have a pretty good rocket on your hands.

Oh, to answer your question about cooling upgrades, you should be finding out if this car has a 160 stat, has good electrical fans, perhaps a more efficient radiator. With the front mount IC, you are warming the air before it goes into the radiator.. it'll help the car overheat. This is not always the case, but can be.. especially in warmer climates. Although, some front mount owners claim no increase in running temps.

Looks like a nice car, however i would not be putting my 3 kids in the back for blasts. It is very hard to drive these cars normal. You will be surprised at how much power they have even with people in them. I would be very careful with the kids in the car, you will find with street tires, all the car wants to do is blow away the tires.

If you need somebody to look at it for you let me know. Looks like the sticker on the license plate says its in lake county. If it is I'll have the guy take me for a ride. Let me know if I can help you out. I have a digital camera if you want any pics of the rust or anything.

GN Ergy sent you an email,
I'll get the responces back from him monday.

I was thinking do these cars have crank fans or electric fans?

The kids will only ride in it if my wifes minivan breaks down.
It's one of those just in case kind of deals.

I know a lot about powerhouse cars, I've been drag racing for 14 years, and have had a few big dogs.
I can't wait to get this and do a little modding.

I would like a streetable 10 sec car, and yes it would be my daily driver, but I only drive 5 miles to work and back. And I work like 5am to 2 pm.
Some of the other cars I've owned and raced over the last 17 years.
69 429 Boss Cougar (1st car)
68,70,71 Mustang ( My uncle was a Ford guy)

69 Z28
78 TA
82 Z28
94 Formula Firebird (car I'm selling now)
87 turbo Charger
87 turbo Daytona
78 924
87 Z24
68 Ghia (with a 2.0L Porsche engine)
drove and didn't race
71 karman ghia droptop (chick magnet)
79 Granada
93 Cavalier
99 Cavalier
An a few I'd like to forget about.

I never had a cooling problem w/ my FM. On a 90 degree day and the AC on with a 160 stat and a V2 FM I ran about 200 degrees. Yes its hot for racing, but not for around town driving. I'd say wait and see on the cooling issues before you spend $500 for fans and such.

KEEP LOOKING FOR OTHERS ALSO

You're still looking for other TRs nearer you also, right?

There very well may one be fairly nearby with zero rust, better interior & less miles for close to same money...
=========================================

Have you checked www.autotrader.com? There are usually 150+ 86 & 87 GNs for sale almost every day, and that doesn't even include Turbo Regals.

HTH :)

Nice resume. :) To answer your question.. these cars have electric fans. There is a small fan on the crank itself, but that's for cooling the intercooler and there are debates to it's effectiveness. But you said the car you're interested in has a front mount intercooler so this won't be a concern. It's probably not there.
