1997 Jeep grand 4.0 Trying to figure out what is causing a grinding noise like worn pads rubbing rotors sound. I know it is not the brakes for sure. I had the noise so I changed all 4 rotors and pads new. The noise is still there. It makes the noise very loud in reverse but stop as soon as you touch the brake it goes away. While in forward it is quiet until you push the brake at slow speeds. It is much louder in reverse the forward. I was thinking pinion bearing but I don't know what a bad pinion bearing acts like. I dont think it is a universal joint because it does not do it all the time but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

Wheel bearings??? Does it change sounds if you turn the wheel back and forth while going about 35 mph.

I'd make sure the rotor backing plates aren't touching the rotors, and also
double check to make sure the steel shims on the calipers aren't contacting the rotors. Both of those can make a loud screeching noise.
good luck.

Sorry I can't help on your issue but you may want to post at Jeep Forum.com Helpful folks there. Fellow 4.0 IL6 owner here too!

Never heard a u-joint make a grinding noise. Could it be a mount going bad and letting the drive shaft contact anything as the engine shifts position?

I opened the differential today and all changed all the bearings. The noise is still there. I will let you know when I find it. Thanks for all the help.
