Hey guy’s,
I asked this question in the hot air section but I didn’t get a response. I’m putting new valve springs (from Poston) on my 84 GN (with the heads still on car) I got a spring compressor and the adapter to hook up to my air compressor. My question is how do I get the spring compressor tool over the springs? There is a sleeve around them. Also once I get the off do I need to re install the sleeves with the new springs?
Thanks for any help
David

If your spring compressor is the type that hooks onto the spring, and uses a threaded rod to push down on the valve tip...you're probably out of luck. If you're going to do it on the car, the best tool is the one that Kirban offers, that sits in place of the rocker for that valve.

As for the sleeves, it depends on the spring, but most likely, yes...you'll reuse them.

Take a big screwdriver and pry them off. We never use the sleeves with replacement springs as the seat pressure is ok without them.

Thanks for the responses guy’s. If I use the screwdriver do I crank up the air compressor to 100 psi (that is what I’ve been told) and use the screwdriver to pop the Valve keepers off. Quickwench I am not too sure what the actual specks are but the are Postons high performance valve springs.
Thanks

NO!!!!! (Sorry, didn't mean to yell) :)

Nick's suggestion re: the screwdriver was in reference to the spring cups. If you REALLY want to muscle things, take his advice. Otherwise, get a different spring compressor.

Thanks Quickwrench
I am glad you posted that before I got my self in a jam. I will call kirban tomorrow and order the valve spring compressor tool (does this tool connect to the rocker arm shaft). I kind of hope not because I just got done replacing all of the retainers and I would hate to have to yank all of them out. Could you use a pipe if you do need to use the shaft? I will also check with poston to see if I need to reuse the sleeves
Thanks again
David

Don't worry much about the sleeves/cups on the original valves. GM calls the original parts springs with dampners. The dampner on the Poston, Kirban, and CC980 springs are the flat spring inside. So no cups when the new ones go on.

Man, this is the kind I have, there is no way to get them off with this? If I knew that, i would have ordered the kit with the tool...
I wonder if I can find this tool locally?
