Ok, i was asked to post this up. The data should be pretty easy to read but there isnt to much right now. i will keep adding data but it will be slow going since the car is not with me at the moment. Anyways the first two are runs with no alky and low boost. every new line is 1 sec. so the first log read 144 which is temp. and 2.5 which is boost pressure. the first line is launch psi and temp. the next line is 159 @ 13.4 psi this is one sec difference. the number next to it is temp change. these are all 1/4 mile runs. All runs had a small burnout in the burnout box which i try to do small ones as it heats the charge up. As far as the alky logs the 2 logs at the top where around 5 on the contoller. Right now im spraying alot. dont know how much but alot. i know for sure the last 6 logs below i was spraying the same amount controller on 7. Im running 2 M15 :eek: nozzles in the back of the intake one on each side of the /\
. I have the alky turn on set at 2psi :eek: or so since i want to fight the heat ASAP. I the ramp rate inside the box is turned down some but i would have to look at it when i go out to arizona again to see where it is for sure. Alky knob is set to 7 right now. I hope i didn't confuse anyone. hell i might have confused myself. anyways let me know. i will start keeping better info on my next logs.

O IAT sensor is in the front of the intake right before the #1 cylinder. Nozzles are in the back of the intake. i attached 2 pictures so you can see. one is the nozzles the other is an intake i test drilled before i drilled mine. thats where the IAT sensor is. Im sure there is more cooling after the sensor but how much is un-known. I know you will get more cooling in the combustion chamber as well. O and to give you and idea how much fuel im pulling. im right around 25% right now to keep the a/f at 11.0:1

do you have 2 nozzels or 4? what are the two holes in the front of the intake?

I know there is already a drilled, tapped and plugged port in the front of the intake from the factory for water injection, but I was told not to bother with it, just put the alky nozzle under the turbo for best distribution...

I see in your pic that you had the egr hump ground down a little bit...is your intake worked? is there a huge difference with the EGR hump? I have my EGR blocked off on the intake, and a near perfect point on the hump...I didnt do the work, but i assume it is a good idea for flow direction...

Im looking at your info like an idiot... what was the difference between the alky and the non-alky? is there a huge difference?

John:)

Ok, I'm using my phone to type this. I'm running 2 nozzles. The picture of the front of the intake is showing you where I placed the iat sensor. The hole to the right is the factory hole. The hole to the left was a test drill to see if my iat sensor placement was good. I'm just showing this to give you and idea where the sensor is in relation to the nozzles. I'm guessing 12-14 inches. Yes my has been worked slightly. And as for the alky difference yes its making a difference. Look at the first log. Within a few sec its peged the iat sensor at 255. Look at the last alky log. Can go 12 seconds and still be under 255. There is even at one point a drop in temps on some logs. Those where the first two runs of the day before heat soak set in. O and on a side note I know the boost is up and down a lot but go figure that's what you get with stock intergrated wastegates. The boost get higher at the end of all the logs due to boost creep once I start spinning the motor over 5500 in 3rd. From here on out it will be rock solid with the new setup which should give better data. O and I can't spell. I was trying to post the data up quick.

I can't really comment on your data right now, but here is a thread I am going to copy and paste with some data.
I am sure Bruce (RIP) would not mind using his work.
The original thread is here;
Intercoolers, design, theory, and data logs - t6p.com - Turbo Buick Regal Resource

From Bruce Plecan - RIP
In what I hope becomes a series of data logs, I want to post this now, with min comment, and then as things progress show the changes and what happens with various items. Hang in there, you'll see what I mean as we go along. From a glance at some of the data from last year, I think there will be some real eye opening material.

This is from my 87, no intercooler, no chemical intercooling, stock turbo, 206/206 cam, 4.2L, 60 PPH injectors, GN ecm with custom code, in batch fire mode, Lockers data logging,
Obviously, I have a timing correction that pulls timing out as the MAT gets near 200dF. And I did tap the Knock sensor. But, the rate of temp increase was pretty well a given at that stage.
And this is on about the 3rd pass working on the in boost tune. It was primarily, set up on the ecm bench. Once I got the AFRs worked out in N/A mode then the PE stuff kinda took care of alot of the tune, and then the WB was a sanity check for what was really going on. This is still a real mild tune as evidenced by the timing. Spkf is, Final Spark. And 200 K/Pa is ~ 15 PSI of boost.

Great info he posted. Now was he using water or meth? What size nozzle or nozzles? How much was he spraying? Distance between nozzle and mat sensor?

I am pretty sure it was "water".
I am still scratching my head why you see temps as high as you see.
Maybe the sensor you installed is bad . . . . . :confused: (I know you probably already replaced it)

nope. never changed the sensor as it seems to be correct from what i can tell. i will switch it next year to see.

.......... I know there is already a drilled, tapped and plugged port in the front of the intake from the factory for water injection, but I was told not to bother with it, just put the alky nozzle under the turbo for best distribution...
................... Im looking at your info like an idiot... what was the difference between the alky and the non-alky? is there a huge difference?
John,
I don't think you can use the plugged 1/8 NPT hole for alky/water injection.
The HA manifold is devided in left/right bank, so if you spray through that hole, you only feed the DS bank.

As far as the difference;
First off, credit of my limited understanding goes to John Estill. :cool:

Rule of thumb is;
For every 1 PSI boost, you raise charge temps 11F.
(Lets work with 10F/PSI boost since it is easy for me to understand this number ;) )

So at 23 PSI boost, the charge temp should be in the area of;
23PSI X 10F/psi boost + ambient F.
In some of the listed runs, the temps are in the 240's @ 23 PSI

Ass-u-ming :eek: ambient of 80F (And many more assumptions made :eek: ), that should be around 310F charge temp.
Since the listed info is indicating 245F, it would equate to about a 21% drop in temp.

How much power is that?
It depends on a LOT of other factors and obviously, Boost231 is putting down some power. :cool:

Great info he posted. Now was he using water or meth? What size nozzle or nozzles? How much was he spraying? Distance between nozzle and mat sensor?

Do you have a pic of the sensor that fits in that hole?
FWIW, this is what I see . . . (this is from a run I recorded a while back)

Don't have a picture right now. Its a 87 iat sensor. The one with the white tip and brass threads.

looking at your powerlogger screen shoot thats cool. however when i ran the powerlogger i would get the same type of data. i dont think the IAT sensor on the powerlogger logs correctly. i went from this data to hotter then hell once i started logging with the xfi. now tell me how this makes any since. look below. the temp should keep climbing as i am at WOT but nope rock steady. its maxed at 208. sensor would never go any higher then that. that doesnt make since.:rolleyes:

here is the sensor im running. standard 87 air temp sensor

I would agree that something does not make sense.
It does not make sense to me that the temp maxes out at 208 consistently.

Here is my observation while I walk blindfolded in the dark :eek: ;
It appears that you have 2 temp sensors; IAT and MAT.
I would switch the two inputs around (If possible), or just unplug the IAT, and connect that to the MAT.
That way, you eliminate one variable at a time.
Of course, I know nothing about XFI, so I don't know if the inputs (Address) can be switched easily in the software or if it requires hard wire changes.

I have thought about this very subject for some time and started at one time questioning my own MAT data.
One thing I will share is that I have verified my data against other data about 5-6 times, and did comparative calculations with IC'd set-ups.
My conclusion is that the data I am seeing appears to be in the correct range.
Before someone says; "I am sure your temp it is at least 50-100F off", my answer is; "How do you know that?" :smile:

In summary;
Based on about 3 years of monitoring and studying the data, I deduce that your input signal and/or the sensor is flawed. (Measurement system analysis)
Only one way to find out . . . . . Sorry I can't be of any more help.

I was logging both IAT at the K&N and also MAT when i was running the XFI. Now with the XFI im only running MAT. I will change the sensor out to see what happens but the data looks good on the xfi. i think the powerlogger was way off.

Cool.
So, what is the XFI showing for the MAT at boost?

I meesed up the post above. I was running both a IAT and a MAT when I ran the powerlogger. Now I just run the MAT sensor with the xfi. What are my MAT temps with the xfi? That data is posted above in my first post. Hell I need to call you and just talk about this data but this is a good place for everyone to learn as well. if you think my temps are off what should they be at? In a post above you said I'm seeing a 21% decrease in temps which is good I think. But I'm spraying a lot. 2 m15 nozzles with a turn on point around 2psi and 7 on the controller

OK, sorry I missed that.
I think it is reading a bit higher than I would expect, especially with that much alky/meth.
I will review some more and let you know what I find.

Meanwhile, it is easy enough to borrow/change the MAT sensor out and see if the reading is at ambient temp in the morning.
Does the temp drop if you hit the test button on the controller at hot idle?
Also, does the XFI have an offset for MAT?

Thinking about it ……..
I had a very similar issue with the EGT. It would be at 1400F just sitting at idle!
It appeared that the curve (voltage output) of the amplifier I was using was not in line with the PL module.
Changed the amplifier with a unit I borrowed from Steve Wood, and BINGO!
Back to normal.

Does the XFI have a sensor they would like you to use?
Case and point; If the sensor output voltage is different, you will get the wrong readings.
Although that does not change the PL readings you have, it is easy enough to swap the sensor and go from there.

Yes, if I hit the test button at hot idle it will drop the temps pretty good. I do this in the staging lanes to get the intake temps down prior to the run. I also do a small burout since it heats the intake back up quick. Also if I let it sit over night and turn the car on not running the sensor is very close to the temp outside. With the xfi the sensor responds faster then with the powerlogger

O and I'm replacing about 20-25% of fuel with the alky. If that helps
