Ignition questions

I've got this Frankenstein 84 car that has some things converted to 87 like the ECU.
I'm having ignition problems, and I don't know if I have an 84 coil and module , or the later 86/87 style. How do I tell the difference??

I see Kirbans sells only a coil labeled as 86/87, but on RockAuto it looks like the same part number fits both cars.

Where are the differences? Coil or Module or both? And how do I identify what I have?

Thanks!

Is this to say according to the diagram on that pdf the GEN II coil can be run off the factory 86-87 wiring? Seems like a good way to move forward to a cheaper more available coil.

Sorry to take this off topic but I wanted to know and the one(RmvBfrFlght) might be alerted with a post in this thread.

Yes that’s what that pdf is saying . You can plug into ether of the coil packs .

Are u doin it with the assumption you are going to get some kinda performance gain?if so i believe u will be disappointed as they both produce about the same amount of spark . If u want to upgrade I would save your $ and get a tr6 as that’s the best ignition upgrade for these cars hands down

Just trying to identify a less expensive alternative to the stock module and coil pack set up. The more expensive I believe is covered with the Bob B setup, and that isn't in my wheelhouse.

Looking at the mailbu set up the plug(s) are pretty different. I guess I need to be looking for some thing from the late eighties.

Maybe something Like this. the plug looks more like the 86-87 plug. I guess I can put the newer coils on.

I guess it doesn't really get that much less expensive. I guess maybe I'm looking for stuff I can pick up at the wrecking yard cheaper and make work.

Because I'm a CHEAP A$$.

Yes, the GEN-II (also called Type-II) systems work on the '86 - '87 cars. Just be sure that it isn't a quick start system that uses two shutter wheels.

Is there a list of vehicles that use this system so I know what I'm looking for?

By these posts I need some kind of adapter harness, but that might be for the 84-85 to the 86-87. Not sure.

Upon further reading that is for the 84-85 to 86-87 so I guess it is plug n play. How will I determine it has a dual shutter?

You need an adapter plate that cost about $10 at rock auto to run a 86-87 coil on a 84-85. Mine went bad over the summer and went crazy looking for a 84-85. Then someone here told me about the adapter plate.
